my sisters PC would not power on .... seems my niece put in a double socket into the 5 socket extension.... and could smell burning !

Anyways replace the PSU I thought....

bought a couple of `cheap` PSU`s .... (I know I know BUT)

the computer was only P III - geforce 4 etc 512mb ram....

so was maybe worth the £15

Connected it all up.

Pressed power on - light came on on the Gigabyte motherboard - millisecond (roughly ;) ) of power then nothing.

took out the leads to the DVD writer and drive.. fans came on....

put them back on and then BANG ! from the PSU - its a 500w item.

what you guys reckon - 2 faulty psus (I tried them both) both did the same thing - except one went bang - or the original damage was the motherboard ?

Curious now ....

Even on a low spec machine I would still invest in a decent branded PSU. There are budget PSUs out there that cover the 300-400W range like Akasa, FSP etc. I think it was the PSUs myself.

yeah fingers burnt I guess - I would have thought even these cheapo 500 watt PSUs would have powered this old thing tho.

Thing is for what a PSU will cost (£30?) might as well buy her something from the MM.

FSP are great for the budget a PSU, have 3 low end PSU's here by FSP that are still going strong after years of use, had one power my old x1800xt without a problem to, now that was amusing.
