i am almost on the verge of just giving up and going to live in a cave.

brothers computer was running perfectly then he decided to plug in the front usb sockets onto the motherboard.

he did it but plugged the ground into the wrong socket.

The flash lit up the whole room.

the psu is without a shadow of a doubt completely dead.

this is where i decide that there is no chance of returning any of the stuff i got for his brand new build as it was our own fault, so have to start again from scratch.

So I started to test what I could to see what could be salvaged.

when replaced the psu(with a naff old 250w) it showed life in that it gave off the siren because i hadnt plugged the power cable into the graphics card. as soon as i did, it stopped doing anything. now on powering up, the fans spin for half a second then turn off. no beeps, no hard drive activity, no monitor activity, nothing.

so i tried testing with other ram, same problem(does this rule out RAM being blown?)

then tried with cpu in his old 775 motherboard but now thats doing the same thing:s

basically, I was wondering if any of you smarter people could inform as to chances of the motherboard/RAM/CPU being burnt out? I dont really have any other ways of testing as i dont have any other 775 boards and no other 775 cpus (other than my own, which i dont want to put into it.) and no other ddr2.

I would really appreciate any help you could give. the next 4 years of Comp Sci at uni are starting to appeal to me less and less:(

I wouldn't have thought your CPU and RAM are blown.

The things most likely to be fried are things connected directly to the PSU, hdd's, 3D card etc.

:Edit: and no that doesn't rule out RAM being blown as if you're motherboard's had it trying different RAM won't make a difference.

If it blew the PSU it could've killed pretty much anything else it was attached to including the motherboard and CPU, especially if it was a no name brand. USB is well known for not having any protection on plugging the connector in the wrong way.

I'm surprised cases still come with individual connectors for USB ports. My Stacker has a single 8pin connector with a blanked out pin, so its pretty idiot-proof when it comes to plugging it in.

Had no idea it was that risky if you got it wrong though!

was thinking the same thing

Just remember to be careful when trying to salvage what you can buy trying them in perfectly working equipment.

I still remember that dreaded day, christmas eve I think it was hence me being in a hurry, and so rushed into mixing and matching.

I stopped cos I was getting nowhere - several days later I found out that from one dead system I ended up with several borked cpus, gfx cards, 2 motherboards and several sticks of ram...

You live n learn ... you live n learn

I blew my usb ports once which a dodgy hard drive... went through my psu rail and fried everything in my usb ports including the usb controller. (Curse you refurb WD cavier)

Rest of the pc was fine. Psu was fine. Sounds like you had some really nasty luck. I didnt think enough amps went down the usb line to let it do much damage.

Less than 0.1 amps will kill a human, very little current is needed to blow something.

Usb will provide upto 500mA in normal operation.

it was a no brand psu and a crappy board.

this is such an expensive mistake to make, anyone know if theres any change of getting anything returned because the MoBo,RAM and hard drive was brand new...

Try it with a new decent PSU, something rated 400W by a good manufacturer, I don't think you'll have blown all your components, definitely get a another decent PSU to test your compoents before you do anything else.

id assume the mobo and psu are dead, likewise the usb ports. id further assume the cpu,r am gfx hdd's and cd drives to be fine.

ive got an abit KD7 with a totally blown usb header (no idea when or how it happened, never connected the thing!) the power trace is blown clean of the board and now theres 5cm of missing copper surrounded by burnination, the controller and hub are fine - the board and everything in it works fine.

you might be lucky!, guess it depends how the port on boards was wired. the KD7 was was clearly wired upto the VIA usb controller, while those on my current AX8 are hooked directly to the +5V / +5VSB (jumper option).

Were i you, i would stop randomly swapping stuff. start with the gfx card, stick it in a known working system, and be ready to kill the power. (make sure its a decent psu in the test system), if you get life from it, stick it in the "good" pile. then try out the ram, if thats good try hdd's/cd's then other adin cards, lastly the cpu. if all of that is ok, stick the good psu onto the suspect mobo, try booting with just the psu and mobo and cpu. leave out the gfx and ram. make sure pc speaker is connected. if you get post error beeps, the board should be fine,a nd it was just the old psu that died. if you dont, write off the mobo

best of luck
