Was pulling away from the lights today when all of a sudden I heard a bang from the engine and lost all power. After rolling for a bit I pulled over to the side of the road, thinking my clutch had gone.

I got out and had a look and there was oil everywhere

and saw some little metal objects in the road.

I wasn't smiling tho.

The nice RAC man gave me a tow home. And now I'm stuck with a car thats not going anywhere.

How much you think it will cost to get this fixed?

Its a 51 plate fiat punto go 1.2 8v.

Dude those pics are massive!!

You fail at the internet. ;)

The biggest problem is that you have a gearbox no one will exchange with, so you'll have to pay a hefty surcharge.

 **** That's one impressive gearbox failure! Looks like the gearbox case has actually split and a drive cog has come out!!

When I had the gearbox changed on my old car I paid £100 for the box and £80 fitting.

I got this used viechle warranty with the car.

It says it covers:
Manual Gearbox: gears, shafts, synchromesh hubs, selectors, bushes, bearings, speedometer drive, overdrive units (when fitted), solenoid, transfer box

And:
Clutch: Center plate covered for oil contamination, pressure plate, thrust bearing, clutch fork, master cylinder, slave cylinder

maximum claim £500

It also say: In the event of a covered item causing damage to a casing then the casing will form part of the maximum claim liability

lots of fine print tho...

I'd speak to the warranty company and see what they say. That certainly isn't normal wear and tear and shouldn't happen to a 1.2 Punto.

I agree, gearboxes shouldnt do that, they should last for ages.

It was owned by some careful drivers before me. And I've seen some people driving punto's a lot harder than I do and they still work.

Hope they dont start quoting small print. There only open mon-fri 9-5 as well.

nicely done..

you should be able to pick up a second hand box for around £50. the box from anything with a FIRE derived engine should fit (mk1 punto, cinq, sei, bravo/a etc). Might need to swap the clutch arm etc over off ** old box, as some of them are hyrdaulic clutch. easy to do though. Clutch will cost a couple of quid. Mate of mine has a box gathering dust back home, but the diff has been removed.. so its not quite a complete unit but they're easy enough to find in scrap yards. they're not hard to fit, just a bit awkard to lug about!

Ha, I thought blowing up a Honda engine was bad enough but you've done a good job on that box lol.

Good luck getting it sorted :)

Its a 1.2 punto..... 0-60 in 13.8..... absolutely no torque..... and only 60 bhp....

Who am I gonna beat off the line? A push bike? I think it'd still have me at the off..

Gonna wait untill monday and see what the warranty people say.

Anyone know of any place's I could get this repaired in the slough / staines area?

Wkd. Phoned this morning and they said I probably have a claim. I just need to get it to a garage, ask them to do some diagnostic work and find out what work needs doing, then get their engineers to phone the warranty company.

So where you reckon I should take it? I'm not allowed to get fiat themselves to do it, so do I take it to a Mr.Clutch or find someone else?

Avoid fast fit clutch places. Use an independant garage, preferably one that you or people you know have had positive experiences with.

Got it in a garage, as recommended by wiksta. They say the gearbox has gone and the clutch has also gone along with it.

They also say its highly unlikely I'll be able to claim on warranty going by their previous experience of warranty companies. What do I do if the warranty company refuses to pay up?
