Hello all,

I'm a train conductor who travels about a lot due to my work and I'm looking for a laptop that has;

1. A decent battery life (minimum 3 hours on full brightness and playing games)
2. Good performance in World of Warcraft
3. A screen that isn't too glossy or reflective as trains can be very bright during summer days.
4. A Blu Ray player.
5. Connectivity (able to connect with my iPhone/mifi device etc for Internet)
6. A decent size SSD

My budget is around £1000, or there abouts.

Any help greatly appreciated!

You will struggle to find a gaming laptop that can actually game at full power on the battery - basically because the battery can't supply enough power to all of the components (For example my laptop (4700MQ/780m) pulls around 175watts at full load (no OC), the battery is only rated at 76.7w/hr....). Even if you could get maximum power on the battery don't expect it to last past the hour mark.

Do you need something portable (14" or less), or are you happy with something in the 15.6" range?

In the 14" range you are looking at laptops based on the same chassis as the MSI GE40. The GE40 is nice but you can save quite a bit money by getting one that isn't MSI branded (but otherwise identical). There is also a Clevo 13.3" chassis available which fits the power requirement but doesn't have an optical drive. You can of course run an external Blu Ray drive with it.

In the larger 15.6" range you have a lot more choice. This is worth a look, although it blows past the £1k mark with your requirements (Blu Ray, SSD etc)

There are other options out there, however for your price range &95 requirement list I would try to find something based on the i7 4700MQ/GTX760(5)m.

Thank you for your helpful reply!

I'm thinking of either the 13.3 or 15.6 ocuk gaming laptops. I realise I may need to extend my budget a little however.

Is there a way to turn off the dedicated graphics? I'm thinking that may extend the 8-cell battery life so I can happily watch a blu ray film or two, and perhaps the intel5000 onboard graphics would allow for some low settings moderate gaming?

Also are the ocuk screens anti-reflective?

Thanks!

Both of the laptops you are looking at (and any that run recent Nvidia graphics) have Optimus. This in effect turns off the Nvidia GPU in favour of the iGP when it isn't needed.

When watching a Blu Ray you should be running on the iGPU anyway thus the battery life shouldn't be too bad.

The iGPU in these laptops will be the HD4600. This should offer up enough performance for low/medium settings in a lot of the most recent games (bar the likes of Crysis 3 / Metro LL). Don't expect to be playing at the laptops native 1080p resolution though.

Games like Left for Dead 2 will run fine on the iGPU at medium / high settings, even at 1080p.

Ill take a look at the Lenovo Y500 now.

And sadly no, the trains that I work on were made in the early 80's, so "plug socket technology" is non-existant ;)

Thank you very much for the help, guys!
