My dad recently went and got himself a new Sony 47W805 and also got a blu ray player from Samsung. This led me to wonder if there would be any benefit(s) other than the remote being able to control the TV for him to have got a Sony Blu Ray player as well?

My PS3 made by sony can be controlled by my panasonic tv and vice versa using it's HDMI Viera connect thingy, basically tv turns on automatically if i turn ps3 on, or ps3 turns on automatically if i switch it to the HDMI input the ps3 uses.
I don't think brand loyalty is worth sticking to one company for, usually just best to get the best deal for your money, even if that means everything is made by a different manufacturer.

In case you didn't know.. the BRAVIA, Regza, VIERA, etc. technologies are all trade names for the same technology: CEC.

In fact,in some cases it is probably better to go for different brands, as if they are both Smart, one brand could have different app options to the other.
