Uh oh!

I’ve just received a Blu-ray gift but it is a USA (region 1) locked film. I’ve tried playing it on my PS5 but it advises it is the incorrect region. Is there a way I can watch it on my PS5, or alternatively, is there a recommended way I can stream from my PC to my LG smart TV over Ethernet without spending a fortune on a piece of malware riddled player?

I guess streaming platforms have taken over the use of them?

Not everyone wants to watch low bitrate versions marketed as "4k" streaming.

Not everyone wants to pay several monthly subscriptions and then still wonder which (if any) service has the movie they want to watch tonight.

Not everyone wants to watch the specific cut shown on streaming rather than the original theatrical version.

And countless other reasons

PS3/4/5 are all locked down with regard to regional coding and theres nowt you can do about it. Even if you manage rip the disc Cinavia or other protection will likely kick in and tell you you can't play it, mileage may vary depending on what you're using to rip. If TV is hooked up to PC you could get away with a freeware player that doesn't care. Honestly unless its an R1 exclusive and assuming you bought it retail just return it and get an R2 disc instead

All fair points.

For me, I normally fall asleep halfway through the film, so wasted on me.
