I impulsively purchased a Reolink NVR this morning.

I have since been looking up Blue Iris and it seems a great piece of software.

Would a BI build be better in the long term?

Thanks.

Nvrs are for set and forget. Blue iris is for tinkerers. You'd need to apply windows updates etc on a blue iris rig, the NVR will be zero maintenance, but blue iris has more features.

It depends on your appetite

I already use pfsense as a router, Truenas for my NAS... throwing something else on the barbie to tinker with is not a bad thing as long as the overall end result is better.

For example, the pfsense router is better than any off the shelf router for a reasonable price in my opinion.

For you, blue iris (or Scrypted) will definitely be better then

I've used BI for over a decade now. It is essentially set and forget but I do go in and have a play every now and then.
