Can blue ray writers write and read normal dvd's that arent on a blue ray dvd?

They will read dvds and most of the ones ive seen write as well

All Blu-ray writers I have seen read DVDs and CDs fine and the current ones (shown on OCUK) all write to DVDs and CDs too.

However, many blu ray drives are not Blu-ray writers. Most drives just read blu ray disks and can't write to them. However many of these Blu-Ray reader drives can also read and write CDs and DVDs. At the very bottom end you get drives like this which are read-only - and cannot write to CDs, DVDs or Blu Rays.

Bottom line: be careful when reading the product details, but there are drives that fulfil your stated needs (blu ray, DVD and CD reading and writing) such as this.
