Blue screen of death

Hi all,

Just recently bought a new comp and put it all together (1st build), and havig installed windows + sp1&2 and a few other bits and bobs I've started getting the blue screen of death, it then resets and goes back to windows and brings up a serious error report with the following summary:

Its happened about 10 times now. It seems to happen quite randomly (for example last time it happened I was trying to dl the 1.12 patch for battlefield 2), and so far is fine when I play games on it.

When it first started doing them it hit me with about 4 in a row once I had uninstalled the nod32 trial (which didn't work properly for some reason), and the balloon pops up saying you have no av software installed - it didn't seem to like that balloon when it faded away and immediately blue screened again. I managed to get round it by clicking close button on the balloon instead then installed norton to shut it up.

Trying to remember what I installed other than nod 32 that could have done this as I don't see what it could have done, I can think of 3 things but not sure if any of them would have done it, but I the errors seemed to start some time around all of these (except option 4):

1) trial of nod32, which didn't seem to work on my comp so I uninstalled it

2) installed a toolbar onto ie (the one that includes a popup blocker). When I did it it asked if I wanted to continue running script errors on ie (could this be it? I can't remember what I clicked but I seem to remember it saying one option was a good idea and I may not have clicked that option lol. How would I fix this if so?)

3) I installed sp2

4) Could it be hardware setup related? By that I mean its my first build, so could I have not plugged in something correctly?

Could it be a sign of a faulty part?

Another strange thing I forgot to mention is that the 'safely remove hardware' option is always in the bottom right of the screen, with the option to 'remove' my hdd. Its a Samsung SpinPoint P SP2004C 200GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (HD-017-SA), and is the first SATA one I've had, so is this a normal option with SATA drives?

The RAM as you can see is OcUK's own, do they often have problems?

Anyone else with any ideas on how to pinpoint the problem, and whether I need to return and exchange the RAM or anything else? Is it worth doing the RAM just to be sure?

One thing I've always been a little concerned about is that the external fan on the psu has as of yet never turned. I've been assured that its a dual fan so the internal one will be, but could it be a faulty PSU as well?

I'll have a go at that, but I haven't been onto any dodgy sites or anywhere which normally bring up this problem. Only thing I downloaded other than webpages, before installing a virusscanner, were the service packs and stuff from my old computer (on which I had an uptodate Norton running).

As I am only a few days into this new comp I wouldn't lose anything if I did a format full reinstall of windows - is it worth doing or is it not that sort of problem?

It flashes up too quickly for me to catch much of it. Only thing I have seen is that it performs a physical memory dump (sounds like me after too much to drink) before restarting.

Any way of slowing it down :P

edit: I'd try to create the situation whereby it BSODs again but so far it hasn't been any one thing which definitely does it.

Dunno if this could give any further clues, but I just re-dled the bf1.12 patch (can't seem to get an uncorrupt copy, was previously assuming it was just a faulty download), and this time when I ran it it came up with this message (usually the patch just fails):

CRC Error: The file c:\Games\EAGAMES\Battlefield 2\RendDX9.dll doesn't match the file in the setup's .cab file. The medium from which you are running the setup may be corrupted; contact your software vendor.

Would point out no BSOD with this, but suggests my directx may be corrupted. Does this seem to be the case and would this explain the problems? If so, how do I go about removing directx and reinstalling it (or is it just a case of installing it again, no removal required?). I'll be reinstalling Directx 9.0c from my gcard cd.
 
Lol sorry that was in reply to enfield reinstalling windaz. Will do the memtest.

Just got another Bluescreen, had disabled autorestart this time tho, this is what it said:

(Dunno if that last bit helps interpret the problem more, sounds far too technical to be of any help but thought I'd include it anyway)

Any further ideas?

ah rocknroll, I did install them, certainly the nvidia firewall anyway, think Active Armour too. Will do as you say and report back.
 
ok uninstalled them (accidentally uninstalled the SM Bus Controller and Ethernet controller too! Reinstalled those off the mobo cd tho, although not the ide driver as instructed) and reinstalled the display drivers. Is there any way to check if this problem still exists, beyond just, er, waiting to see if it happens again? Or will that have deffo sorted it out?

edit: looking on add and remove programmes - I have nvidia drivers, nvidia forceware network access manager, and nvidia wdm drivers still installed - should any of these go (what are the wdm drivers for?)

edit: does this mean it ain't a hardware problem, ie. is that solely software related, or if it BSODs again could it still be hardware related?

Well unfortunately my problems didn't end there. I got a couple of different BSODs after that whilst trying to install Rome: Total War, which ultimately culminated in not being able to load up windows due to an Unmountable Boot Volume (just got to the Windows loading screen and then went into this BSOD). I've formatted and reinstalled everything, hopefully this time it'll be more stable. And I think I'll give rtw a miss for now ;).

edit: by everything I don't mean the nv firewall, nor the ide sw drivers - those I left out as per your advice :)
 
well fingers crossed I have been on it most of the day and no BSODs yet (do have sp2 installed as well). Litmus test will be installing rtw but I wanna enjoy it for a few days first ;)
