I have a Acer 5742 laptop which recently has being overheating a fair bit and several lines on the screen.

I have turned the laptop on today and after the BIOS post it will immediately blue screen. I have tested the RAM with MEMtest in another laptop and doesn't find any errors. Also tried a different hard drive as i have a SSD installed but when trying to install windows i get the blue screen.

I have tried to get the error code but the screen only flashes. I am running the laptop off the mains power and the battery removed.

Any ideas on sorting this please.

I think the video card is cooked, depends really where you get several lines on screen, if its before windows gets any chance to even start loading then most likely some of the hardware is dead, most likely video card... It could be that windows is playing round with you as well, you could reinstall it and hope for the best. I wouldnt be surprised if CPU cooler is dead and thats why computer blue screens since you mentioned over-heating, If thats the case I wouldnt advice you switching it on and off a lot since that most likely will lead to CPU becoming a piece of coal.

lines are faint and go vertical on the screen, there is also a sort of fuzzy line at the top of the screen which normally disappears after a slight top on side of screen.

I left the laptop for a couple of hours and than tried again which booted straight into windows. For some reason all my profiles seem to of being reset to default (waterfox, photoshop ect) ... virus scans ect show no infections.

CPU temps at idle seem to hang around 50 degrees.

thanks for the reply.

Then its probably not a windows problem. Seems it might be your graphics card :( Do they appear on an external display if you have one plugged in?

connected the laptop to tv via HDMI and the lines are there but not as bad.

Have updated the BIOS and done a clean w7 install on another drive today and only installed waterfox to rule out software issues ect, and still the same :(

Yup well that's pretty definitive then, its a hardware problem, very very likely your graphics card. Sorry dude. Looking into your laptop, it seems like it has an integrated GPU, so you cant just whip it out and replace it. I think you will need to RMA it.

RMA not possible mate, warranty ran out 4/5 months ago :(

will use it until it completely stops working than order a new laptop

thanks for the help mate.

Always the way. Can always sell it as parts, after all everything but the motherboard works.

.. or reballing any BGA which is very common issue.
I'd hang those manufacturers on their balls for such policy that allows hardware to get unusable few months after warranty stops.
