I have recently completed a format and fresh install of XP with no problems (following baddass list) up untill now.

I tried to install a program that controls the speed of my GPU fan (SmartDoctor) but just into the install the screen freezes and I'm faced with the blue screen of death.

After looking into it as much as possible I have done the following but with no joy....

  • Used Driver Cleaner and instaled latest graphics drivers
  • Increased pagfile size
  • Cleaned the registry
  • Defraged (Diskeeper)
  • Checked all other drivers

I may have done more but cant remember at the mo but I'm still left with the problem.

I turned off auto restart to get the STOP message which is at the bottom.

Thanks.

This is all I seemed to do yet it was still causing problems and saying it was a driver issue so I did what I do best in these situations.....

GIVE UP AND FORMAT

It's not all that bad because I had only just finished a fresh install and was still setup for it so it didn't take me to long but this time I'm gonna go slow and watch what I do when it comes to drivers.

Thanks for ya help.

Well after yet another fresh install I thought this time I had got rid of the problem but guess what.....IT'S BACK.

I have now isolated the problem and it's down to one program I try to install. The program is Asus SmartDoctor and is an app designed to monitor the temp of the gfx card and you are also able to control the speed of the fan over the GPU. It works along side the drivers instaled for the gfx card and has worked for me in the past no trouble.

But this time it's being a git and cant understand why?

I have instaled other programs so far with no issues.

I'm using the most recent omega drivers and the recent smartdoc but even when I tried to go back to the old ver I used it still failed on me.

I have tried all that I can think of but am left clueless once again.

BigBoy's second link says it's possibly a nVidia problem yet theres no nVidia on my machine so now what?

Please help me Obi-Wan Kenobi your my only hope.

Is The motherboard Nforce based? do you use the onboard Nic? and nvidia firewall as this is knows to cause problems.

The MB is Shuttle and NIC is used. No nVidia firewall in use, no firewall except router.

what type of shuttle?? p4? amd? via? what drivers do you have installed befor you install the gfx card and software?

P4. The gfx is Radeon x700 and the software I have always used is Omega drivers.

Doing a little trouble shooting I have found that when I try to load Asus SmartDoctor whether it's on my desktop or an older ver on CD it freezes and the blue screen appears however when any other app is loaded again cd or machine everything runs fine.

So it's something to do with this one app or gfx card is faulty.

are you installing the latest intel motherboard drivers and agp/pci-e drivers before you install the gfx card drivers/software?

I install the latest chipset drivers first but am not installing pci-e drivers.....didn't know they excisted? Noob at work here so be gentle if this seems stupid.

  • Shuttle XPC SB83G5
  • P4 3Ghz
  • 1Gb RAM (2 Sticks)
  • 2 x WD SATA Drives (120 & 60)
  • Radeon X700 PCI-E GFX Card
  • Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Sound Card

As for the memory test....no not yet. Not sure on what software to use.

memtest86 is the only thing i would use to test ram. remove one stick and run with just a 512mb of ram boot off the memtest floppy and leave it running an extended or advanced test over night to see if that brings up any errors.

here is the version of memtest you need.

extract the zip to a folder and run the install.bat file and create the floppy disk. Once thats done reboot the machine and make the comp boot from the floppy disk and follow the software and it will tell you what to do.

To the shops I go (no floppy disc in sight). With 2 drives in a shuttle leaves no room for a floppy drive so it's of with the case yet again.

Give me a couple days with this and await response.

Thanks :)

Thanks for the memtest boot cd. Had it running for about 2 hrs with no errors found but i'm not sure how long I should run it for, overnight maybe?

I played CS for over an hour with no problems at all so the gfx card is working fine so it's all coming down to this one app.

Overall everything is running fine, all apps load and run with no problem.

All I was looking for is an app that controlled the fan speed of the gfx card and asus smartdoctor done that very simple for me.

AWPC recommendation of RivaTuner does this one thing and more but it's a little beyond my wee brain cos it's all in the registry and having attempted to try it I failed as always. ATITool also does this and more but it doesn't set to the setting I want meaning I have to go into it everytime I reboot unlike smartdoc.

I'm willing to do away with this app if I can find a similar one however it would be good to have it back which brings us right back to the problem in hand :(

Also with the software your having trouble wiith have you looked thru the documentation to see if all your componants are compatable with it as perhaps it doent like you motherboard. and this is causing the problems.

It was no problem before and not only have I tried the latest version but went back to the old ver just to make sure it wasn't the new release that was causing the issue.

As for the fanmate, it wont fit cos.....well I own a shuttle so unless I cut a nice whole in the side of the case (a chance to use my dremmel) it aint going in so it really has to be software.....

But I still may cut cos I haven't modded in a while.

You should really try to get Rivatuner working as really not that hard to work out a few button clicks and your done (plus its free)!

I'll read up on how this works but if ya see smoke then it's me getting it all wrong.....again.

Fan mate is a good idea but not sure if you can run it using the 3pin plug thats on the fan now so may need some modding but good all the same.

Lets see how things work out..........still never got rid of the BSOD though lol.

Ran memtest overnight and ran test 09 for near 3 hrs and all results were ZERO errors.

Tried one last time to install the app to see if has magicly dissapeared but sadly the BSOD once again graced itself. :(
