Just got myself a little USB bluetooth dongle and installed the softare before inserting (as instructed) then after a reboot and inserting the dongle windows tells me "USB Device Not Recognised".

Anyone know what I should do to try and remedy the problem?

Bluetooth dongles caused me more hassle than any other single piece of hardware, I'm guessing you're not on Windows 7 as bluetooth installation was a breeze for me on W7. You can try:

open device manager
find the bluetooth device (I'm guessing it is an unknown device in device manager)
right-click it and choose update driver
browse my computer for driver software
let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
hopefully you will see the driver you installed before the reboot listed
select it and click on next, hopefuly the dirver will install

The problem I used to have on XP and Vista was that microsofts own bluetooth drivers would get installed, and the vendor drivers would just get ignored, the steps above should remedy this if this is your problem. Hope this helps.

The grim irony is that if you hadn't bothered with the software it might have just worked. I've had 2 of these and neither has required a driver, though I did need Obex transfer wizard in order to shift stuff via bluetooth.

Sorry - should have said. Using XP Pro.

Have tried reinstalling driver as described but no joy I'm afraid!!!

Bloody thing is as hot as the pits of hell when it's been in a while - is this usual? I mean it's so hot you can't touch the metal of the USB connector!!!

It's one of the nano bluetooth dongles btw. Tiny thing which looks like a small peice of plastic on the end of a bluetooth connector.

Damn shame as I had bluetooth built into my laptop and used it all the time to sync my phone with outlook :(

Sorry if this seems a dumb question but is the dongle connected to a laptop or desktop?

If it is connected to a desktop then make sure that it plugged into one of the rear USB ports and not one of the ports that are on the front/top/side of your case. Reboot and see if it detects it?

I recently had a problem with Windows notifying me of an Unrecognised Device recently and, following some advice from another user, this was all I needed did to do to fix it.

If it is connected to a laptop/netbook then I don't know sorry.
