Gently rub on a micro fibre cloth seems to be some peoples solution to remove dirt build up.

i have just bought one, my wired one went and the bloke in the apple store rubbed it gently on a piece of white paper until a load of gunk fell out and it worked again!

That works for a while until eventually the only fix is to take it apart, a process which involves breaking the glued trim near the bottom.
