Where are you downloading from? Have you tried the BY FTP?

my by is a piece of crap. I seem to have major routing issues, and they wont help me 'cause i have a router installed...yeah thats the source of my problems thats why its the 2/3rd hops that are pingin to 1000 :|

Just tell them you dont have a router then? Or connect straight to the cable modem while your on the phone with them.

tbh most issuse can be solved by changing the contention ratio line that your using, aslong as you have a Surfboard or a Webstar with updated firmware you can easy change it!

thing is by the time i usually get thro (around 30 odd minutes) the problem will resolve itself. And they can tell whether you have a router by checking their modem so u can't be like no im not using one. And as im not gaming very much any more im not that fussed (my dload speeds are usually fine)

Cant see as any of our problems are going to get much better given NTL's announcement today about redundancies.

Every time I call I have to unplug the router I use as well, even though over the last 15 calls we have been able to establish its not the router. These guys follow a script though and the majority of them don't have the common to work outside the script.

I was busy telling one guy I had pings of 600 and because he's worked through his script all he could ask was that I monitor it and get back to them, even though thats what I was doing right there and then. Still monitoring it to this day.

Crap tbh.

for those that are having trouble i may have a solution.

after getting poor d/l speeds (1/2 mb/s on a 10mb connection) and pings of 150ms to www.bbc.co.uk and BY saying nothing is wrong i messed with the upstream channel ID in the modem settings and it fixed everything.

http://192.168.100.1

configuration > change upstream channel to a value of 1-4 and save changes then restart modem.

give it a go ;)

Spooky,

Good tip, I've changed these on numerous occasions in each case its been a temporary fix only, unfortunatley this is what the 'tech supoprt' folk do to give you a better contention ratio. A temporary fix though is betetr than no fix at all!

It seems that the problem generally is one of over utilisation of the network so the upstream channel you are on is saturated, ttech support move you to a less saturated one and everything gets better for a while. The problem is they move lots of people to the new one and your back to square one.

That is what I get as of today on 10Mb blueyonder in the Yorkshire region. I have called them several times about this, and run through the normal 'you can't expect every website to give you 10Mb/s' responses and the other ones they seem to get from their 'Tech Support 101' list, etc.

I've spoken to about 5 different support advisors over the past couple of weeks. The one last night had me download a program called TCPOptimizer and said my Windows was limiting my download speed. Previously to this, downloads from the BY games site started at around 500Kb/s and dropped out to around 200-300Kb/s. Since I've downloaded this file (which BY don't offer support for) my downloads start at 1Mb/s and drop down again to 200-300Kb/s. So I am back where I started, I am considering cancelling because I am getting nowhere near the speed I am paying for and do not seem to be able to get anywhere with Tech Support.

Even calling Tech Support is a pain as they won't deal with you whilst you're going via a router so I have to disconnect that and reconfigure my PC to even speak with them. Then sit through the same stuff such as pinging the BBC site and downloading a file for them. I get pings of 20m/s or so to that, but I can't seem to get them to accept that I am getting nowhere near my 10Mb/s service.

In fact the only reason I haven't cancelled now is that other than these speed issues I was happy with the service I had previously. On top of this I am not keen on having the faff of signing up to another ISP down the DSL route which would mean more expense for me.

Not happy at all.

I'm having the exact same problems silverskyline, tech support are so scripted and as for having to dig around under the desk and unplug the router every time, well grrr

nice to know I'm not alone though :D

only reason i havent stopped yet, is cause its fairly reliable and they dont seem to have any problems with me dloading 100s of gigs a month
