Blueyonder up and down?

Running slower than normal here mate.

I think they are in the process of pushing out the Virgin Media firmware accross Knowsley.

My BY internet is fine, but my TV-Drive is having problems picking up an IP address at the moment.

My blueyonder is fine :)
But I never have had a problem with BY with all my 7 years with them, only had 2 hickups in the time being with them :D

Blueyonder has just been bought out by Virgin

Exciting times these are not. Apparently strict fair usage policy is the order of day. If you download too much.. your bandwidth will be zapPed!!

Looking into to moving to Sky as we speak.

Blueyonder hasn't been 'bought out' by Virgin. The Virgin name is simply the new collective name for NTL:Telewest.

As for moving to Sky, do you think that Sky doesn't have a strict FUP?

I'm not convinced Virgin's FUP will be any more strict than it was under the Blueyonder name, I haven't seen any traffic shaping yet on my 10mb connection, and I average 300gb+ a month. Surely if they were going to introduce shaping, it would have happened already.

Not again :( Blueyonder, or Telewest I should say, has been bought by NTL and has been re-branded Virgin Media due to their recent purchase of Virgin Mobile. They decided Virgin is a better brand than NTL or Telewest, and they would be right, so the re-brand went ahead. Richard Branson owns 10.7% of the company as a result of the Virgin Mobile deal.

They currently have no plans what so ever to change the FUP. In fact NTL have only recently changed to 'unlimited' to match Telewest!

Sky has a FUP the same as Virgin Media do. Also all their tiers below 'Max' are download capped at 2gb and 40gb depending which one you pick.

There is nothing that currently puts one ISP over another in terms of fair use. All those that have a cap are usually enforced and those which are unlimited have a FUP to stop people taking the Micheal.

Please refrain from posting unless you actually know what you are talking about. Thanks :)

I'm supposed to get 10 meg but instead I get around 7-8

No, your supposed to get up to 10mb. Big difference. For the record, no ISP has guaranteed speeds. They all sell their services as 'up to'.

I'm on the 4MB connection and it's really getting beyond a joke now, I'm moving house in April so I'll be phoning up to cancel my contract pretty soon.

I'm in two minds to take up a new Virgin contract at the new address as I'll be in the same postal area

Each week, the service quite frankly sucks for 2-3 evenings. Consistently worst on Mondays for some reason.

When I switch my pc on it'll either take about 30mins for the service to acquire a connection, or download speeds/pings are poor - quite frankly it's a lottery! e.g. last night I was playing a game and my pings were averaging 150ms

When the service is running as it should it's perfect, but just too flaky at the moment for my liking. Have phoned their helplines on numerous occasions but it's always a problem at their end, not mine

It does seem to depend on your area, I never have a problem getting my full 10meg. I'm leeching from Giganews at 1.17 MB/s as I type this.

word on the street :D (source - cable forum) says traffic shaping is trialled in certain areas (Swansea is one i can remember) but its not too bad, restricting 10mb to 5mb at peak times..... yeah it could be far worse, they are being fair on this one imo

for the record, my browsing in general has been slow past few weeks with random 'page cannot be displayed' errors but the last few days it seems ZOOOMY, i have no idea if its just me though because my speed tests have always been about right. (although my downloads start off slow and slowly climb)

edit: oh i am a ntl/virgin customer

Agreed, my postcode begins with FK1 - two friends of mine (one in FK2, the other in FK4 - we're all literally within a couple of miles of one another) are a bit puzzled when I tell them about my blueyonder woes as they've had solid, stable and consistent connections with TW for years and not had a single problem

Had trouble with my BT line, friends using AOL or Telewest have had problems as well! Looks like all ISP's are struggling with lots of new subscribers and line upgrades. 8MB broadband isn't faster than 2MB if my connection is down! :(

Bristol here, looks like we have ISP's to match our bus service.
