what is your experience with Bluray and disc spinning / operation noise

i just got my first ever bluray player (sony BDP S490) and there is a whine/whirring while the movie is playing. enough to be annoying to me :(:p

do blurays need to spin a lot faster than DVD. are they all going to be louder or do you think it's down to quality of unit/drive used

when i played a normal DVD in it the noise quieted to a level i was happy with

i don't really blast my films and watch late at night too so sound levels are an issue

:)

I have a Sony S370. There is a slight whine when a BD is playing, but DVD is almost silent, bar the odd noise when the laser moves.

Sony did tell someone, when they asked about any heat issues, that the fan only comes on when it gets too warm. I pulled the player out to look at the fan, and sure enough the fan was not moving when a film was playing.

It's not loud enough to bother me though, although different people are going to find certain noises and pitch of noise more irritating than others.

Maybe you will have more luck with a Panasonic. Although their cheapest player the BD75, is known for not being particularly quiet.

thanks. i may just look to pick one up cheap and then it wouldn't bother me as much
i could even live without one for now, it's just i got a 'free' 3D kit when i bought my TV, with 4 blurays and two pairs of glasses so wanted to get the best from the TV.
in reality though i'll probably buy very few 3D films
