Hallo everyone :)

Please can you all offer some help/advice? I just got ES Oblivion for the PC and needless to say I wanted to fix a problem that was very apparent on my system - distant ground textures were very blurry with a definete line sperating the area where the textures had loaded.

So I installed the mods found in the Oblivion_make_it_pretty_pack:

1. jarrod_oblivion_new_texture_mod-complete
2. Jarrods_oblivion_new_texture_mod_patch
3. Landscape_LOD_replacement_textures_Border_regions
4. Landscape_LOD_Texture_Replacement
5. Natural_Environments
6. Grass_without_Tiling

I then enabled them thru the Oblivion launcher. In addition to the above I also did some other minor tweaking to the .ini like reducing grass-size, disabling background music etc to get some more FPS and more importantly hoping to make distant textures appear.

However even after all of this I still get blurry distant ground textures. I took some screen-captures :

:(

Am I doing something wrong? I know I dont exactly have a screaming computer but I think I should be getting better results in Oblivion than what you all see! Would appreciate any advice, thanx :)

There was a mod that made it less blury but didnt fix it.

Edit

I see you already have the mod installed (3. Landscape_LOD_replacement_textures_Border_regions) that i was thinking about.

On a similar note... What are some good mods for Oblivion to make it look better and play better?

I used to have a few but I formatted my HD and forgot to save my Oblivion saved game so haven't played it in a while.

Check this out. You can see some before-after shots here of Oblivion - just roll your mouse cursor over the pics to see the difference. I guess they were taken using a hi-end PC cuz my game looks nothing like that when I used the same mod. This is exactly the problem Im having...

Also roll over this image...oh I WISH :P

From what I can see when playing Oblivion - you are playing in a high-res texture "square" within which all of the scenery looks good. However beyond this squares borders is where you notice the blurries. Im not well-versed on these things but I was wondering why we cant instruct the game to extend this hi-res area surround the chracter (increase draw-distance area) so the borders with the blurries are further away. You can do similar things to Flight Sim 2004 (which incidentally is immensely tweakable) via its .cfg file.

Make sure you have Anisotropic Filtering set to 16x

Great idea..I had not given that any thought but.... :( ...it made no difference. Playing Oblivion surrounded by out-of-focus scenery is such a bore

Thank you for the suggestion though, I had all my fingers crossed after setting my vid card to 16X Anisotropic..

To make the distant textures look better you need to install some of the higher detail LOD mods, they use more Vid Card memory though so they are only really recomended if you have a 512mb card.

Anyway have a look on this site:

I think its specifically the "Better Tiling LOD Textures (4096)" you are after :)

Cheers for that link, its quite useful:)
Should look good on my new X1900 and shiny new NEC monitor.. Last time I played Oblivion I only had an X850XT!

You are correct. In an ini file you can change a variable called 'uGridsToLoad' which will increase the hi-res area you're in. I believe it can only take odd numbers. However, as you increase this you are demanding the computer to render an exponentially larger piece of detailed terrain, so expect a large performance hit. Try it on your system and see how it works, might be a nice improvement. :)

Thanx HicRic!! Im so gonna try that tomorrow...will let u know how it went..will post a screen-capture :) Bleh gotta go get some kip....Monday calls

Cant wait to try it out!!!!

I had much the same reaction when I first got this game:

You need the 4096 texture replacement mod, the normal map fix mod, and Qarl's texture pack looks fantastic too.

Then you need to have a look here:

http://www.tweakguides.com/Oblivion_1.html

For some good tweaks including the uGridsToLoad tweaks, and memory management tweaks.

Here's a full list of my mods:

Woot woot the 4096 textures worked perfectly!! :D Which has amazed me because I thought there was no way a 256MB card could handle it but it does...and smoothly too! But now check this out....the problems...er...reversed lmao...now the distant texures are great but the NEAR ones are..well not blurred but less sharp...somehow I need to tell Oblivion to draw 4096 CLOSE to me as well!

Im now downloading Qarls Texture Pack 2 (a honking download at 308MB), once thats in along with a few other mods I will post some screenshots!

Thanks for the help so far :) , hopefully I wont come back squealing....

PS: Squiffy...what mods are u running in that screenshot? :)

that pic above is scaled down, I have this one which is 1680x1050, AA and 16x AF is disabled but it doesn't show far-off detail. I recommend "cats", "horse saddle bags", "better night sky", "natural enviroments" mods. Oh and "view distant tamrial"

I'll take another couple of screenshots later with AA & AF 16x enabled, with further distance
