I have been looking to get a company car for quite a while now and I have to make up my mind pretty soon. I have looked at a varied range of cars and like a child in sweetie shop - the more cars I look at the harder I find the decision is!

The pcp company Im in touch with are pretty good and say they will match any deal I find on contracthireandleasing.com - my monthly budget is quite high but as I wish to spend my wages on beer and houses Im trying to keep an eye on the tax costs and thus will be looking at a sensible diesel saloon...which may make this a boring thread but there are plenty of decent dervs these days.

My main problem is that it costs cira £80 more per month for an auto car over a manual - if im going to get a manual id prefer a more exciting car to drive, a crusier with 3 pedals is pointless imho.

I currently drive a 607 hdi - it is a 'zimmer frame mobile' but suits me well as I spend 90+ mins per day on slow motorways and the car is the perfect place to be, you rarely feeltired or uncomfortable after even the longest journey and the gadgets and toys make it effortless to drive and a good place to be. It is also very spacious and great for taking out family and freinds. It also turns a lot of heads, a rare car that people genuinly seem interested in. The only critism of the 607 is that it doesnt have the handling ability when you wish to go for it, it has a fair amount of power for overtaking but the boat like handling means that the car is never enjoyable, if it was I really think it would be the perfect car for me right now.

With this in mind, the first car I looked at was a 5 series, I like to the look of them, they are a simlar size to the 607 and are supposed to be the 'ultimate driving machine'. They are great to drive and very cleverly thought outeven in the 520d guise plenty quick enough, but Im not fond of the (****** salesman) image and they lack a special somthing and is a very common car where I work.

Ive so far looked at the A6 2.0tdi s-line which is quite simlar to my current car but with more discreet looks and slightly better handling. I also looked at the Jag X-type 2.2d, its a decent drive despite being more Mondeo in a dress than baby Aston. The Adui A4 2.0tdi cab is a nice car, but a little girly. I am also very fond of the Alfas and the GT (looks and drives great), Brera and 159 are all worthy condendors.

I also looked at the Saab 9-3 which has a great cockpit but doesnt drive very well and the Lexus is220d - a great car but the costs of rental and tax make it more expensive than a Phaeton. Im a big fan of Japanese cars, but Id go for the baby bentley every time.

Has anyone got any of the cars mentioned who can give some input? Has anyone got any alternative suggestions?

Considered the 320d? I would look at those and also the Alfa GT/Brera JTDs.

Remember tax is calculated as list price of the car x the appropriate CO2 %, so big diesels aren't necessarily cheaper than smaller petrol cars.

This might sound daft but read on..

Considered an Alpina D3? 200bhp, 0-60 in some sort of suprisingly decent time, rare, plus its not really any more expensive than a 520d.

its worth a look fox and i must say that the new 3-series coupe is tempting also. the main thing i have against bmw's is the fact that they are so common; where i work there are probably about 100 cars in the carpark and 90+ are bmw 1/3/5 and the odd 7...i really dont wish to follow suite. sad i know.

i was quite stuck on the 520d at first but i drove the manual and its not as good as the 530d auto and for the cost of a 520d auto (or a lexus is220d - my other choice) i could have a vw phaeton which imho is a far superior car badge or not.

i like the alfa(s) and with the apparant reliability problems maybe they are a good car to have as a company car. i genuinly dont think there is anything like the alfa and the gt is one of the cheapest cars tax wise.

i suppose that i am guilty of making too much of a small decision, but at the same time i will have to stick with the car for two years (or change job :D ).

Best way of owning an Alfa! The lease company will be great at sorting you out with a quick replacement when it's being repaired :p

If you like the X-type but think it's too mondeo like, why not look at other jaguars?

An XJ6 with the 2.7 Diesel V6 and Autobox isn't much more than a phaeton on that site. The interior and refinement of these cars is stunning.

Was also going to suggest a Citroen C6 but they seem a bit expensive for what they are... very nice cars though.

A BMW 520D would be a sound buy though, can't believe how fast they are for the base diesel engine...
