Ok so I need a little educating here as I can't for the life of me figure out why BMW engines stick out like they do and why they are good?
Other than looking a bit special (not in a good way) they surely pose a serious risk to your shins if you should be in a slow speed accident.
If they are just twin engines why are they so bloody big!?

They are a boxer twin engine, some of the advantages on a bike are they are air cooled so no need for radiators and pipes etc, and they can keep the centre of gravity lower down.

I've not heard of anyone damaging their shins, they've proven again and again to actually save bikers legs in accidents as they hit the deck instead of your legs, and saved many police bikers legs when they've been sandwiched against central reservations or similar.

Here's a link discussing advantages/disadvantages, mainly with the car kind but basically the same:
The advantages and disadvantages of boxer engines : r/AutomotiveLearning (reddit.com)

And the reason they are so big is they're 600cc each piston :p
