Bmw e46 m3

that M5 looks rather nice, not sure about the gearknob but i can imagine that it's nicer to hold than the stock one

OP: if the M5 is a bit too excessive you could always look at Alpina B3S or B10S, much cheaper too :p

It's an ACS short shifter IIRC.

A decent Alpina B10 is not really much if at all cheaper than a decent M5 of the same age.

Just thought I'd chip in. Mine's a cab, as seen below, and I absolutely love the thing. It's great fun, and highly recommended. Very expensive to run like others have said, you might think "oh yay a £50k car is now only £15k!!!" but it's still a £50k car at heart and costs as much as one to maintain. Tyres will be 200-250 per corner (even if you don't go to BMW) and if you drive it like it's meant to be driven might last you 12 months. Living and working in brighton mine doesn't see any motorway driving at all, I highly doubt I make even 20mpg and that £65 tank probably gets just over 200miles when I'm trying to drive like a good boy (less when not, obv).

Still, don't regret it for a second! Nor will you!

I've just had a quote on 3rd party warrenty for an E46 m3, was wondering what you guys were getting, 1 year, 2, 3 years etc?

Any figures on how much the springs cost to replace? heard their prone to cracking...

Might be worth trying BMW/Mondial too, if you got full dealership SH and recall work has been done, if it was needed. There's 3 different types of warranty they offer. Don't think you can get the Comprehensive Warranty if you havent renewed BMW warranty annually but you can get the Drive Line and Named Components warranty. Their "rolling" monthly policy is transferable to a new owner if you sell too, which can help if selling.

I replaced 6 rear springs in 4 years. I had Eibachs on the car for most of the time so had to buy a new set of 4 springs 3 times! BMW never charged me for labour on the springs I had replaced, just my cost for any parts required.

No you can't - once a BMW warranty has elapsed you cannot renew it and you cannot take out a new policy regardless of service history.

I'm sure we've had this argument in the past :p

There was talk on PH that you could now buy a BMW warranty even if it had lapsed. Can't find anything on it though as PH search is broken.

One thing I did spot on the BMW website was Driveline cover which sounds a lot better than I originally assumed. Sounds like it covers clutches and the SMG pump. It is limited to £5k though.

Please note that any components not listed are not covered.

Casings

Casings are covered when damaged by the failure of an insured component.
Engine

All internally lubricated components, including but not limited to the following:

Cylinder head, cylinder head gasket, valves (excluding decarbonisation, burnt or pitted valves and valve seats), valve springs, valve guides, camshaft and bearings, camshaft followers, hydraulic lifters, timing gears, timing chains, piston and piston rings, cylinder liners and liner seals, connecting rods and small end bearings, gudgeon pins, crankshaft and crankshaft bearings, oil pump and oil pump drive, distributor driveshaft, flywheel, starter motor ring gear, engine management sensors.
Final Drive

All internally lubricated components, including but not limited to the following:

Crown wheel and pinion, differential gears and bearings, 4X4 transfer box, halfshaft, halfshaft bearings, driveshafts, bearings and constant velocity joints, propeller shaft universal joints and centre bearing, wheel bearings, final drive sensors. (Excluding rubber boots and gaiters).
Gearbox

All internally lubricated components, including but not limited to the following:

Gears, shafts, synchroniser hubs and baulk rings, selector shafts and selector forks, internal bearings and bushes, oil pump, valve and valve block, clutches and brake bands, governor, torque converter, modulator valve, gearbox sensors. (Excluding external linkages)
Miscellaneous

The rectification of oil leaks is not covered and the cost of seals and gaskets will be accepted where they are required as a direct consequence of a valid claim under the insurance.
Sundries

Working materials i.e. oils, filters, antifreeze are claimable as a direct result of a valid claim providing the vehicle is not within 1,000 miles of its next scheduled service.
Timing Belts

Timing belts and tensioners are covered providing that the last due change has taken place as specified by the manufacturer's schedule (proof required). Damage subsequently caused if timing belt has not been changed as specified by the manufacturer is specifically excluded.
Turbo/Super charger

Factory fitter turbocharger, intercooler, and wastegate.

That is shocking!!! Surely they can bring out a revised part that doesn't break as often!

Yes we have and you are wrong.

BMW will offer a warranty even if the warranty has lapsed, as long as the car has full dealership service histroy, MOT and you warrant that there are no modifications. All three warranties are obtainable, at less than 100,000 miles and in some cases, over.

Here's the BMW phone number if you don't believe me, ask for the Insured Warranty Department: 0800 325 600. Happy for you to phone and confirm yourself. Will only take 5 mins of your time.

I've had this confimed by BMW directly themselves and also by my local dealership.

They changed their policy earlier this year, as I told you before.

Good pun! Yeah, but we have cobbles up here which wreck suspension. Although, I do know others who have had the issue very frequently.

As a matter of course, I had all bushes and suspension checked every 6 months and replaced if showing any signs of wear. You would be amazed at how replacing some worn Rear Trailing Arm buses can transform the car to like new again.

Here's an email I received from BMW some weeks ago when I was considering buying back my old M3:

Dear Mr *******,

Following our recent conversation please find attached the demands and needs statement and a graph to help you chose which level of cover suits your needs for the renewal of the BMW Insured Warranty and Emergency Service cover for your BMW M3. I would like to inform you that as your previous warranty cover has lapsed there are a few terms and conditions that you will need to confirm and agree to before purchasing this policy:

Terms and Conditions:

• You will need to confirm that the vehicle has been serviced in accordance with BMW’s recommendations and has not been modified in any way.
• The service and MOT on the car is up to date.
• The cover will not cover any faults that existed at the time of purchase or prior to the policy start date.
• If you do decide to take out the cover it will not commence until a month after the date of purchase. This is for the warranty and the breakdown cover.

Below are the quotes for your renewal. The quotes are on the basis that the mileage on your vehicle is under 60,000 if it is over then the quotes will be different.

 Comprehensive – our highest level of protection, covering the majority of your BMW’s factory-fitted components (does not include wear and tear items)
 Named Component – mechanical and electrical breakdown cover for a specific range of factory fitted parts
 Driveline – our basic warranty, covering the main engine, transmission and drive-train elements

On subject of negotiating service prices I have just been sorting 4yr service for the Cayman

PC Nottingham quoted £959 for major service, plugs, brake fluid and drive belts swapped

Got them down to £720, anyone ( Housey ;) ) know if there is likely to be much more room for negotiation

Wow, good to see that BMW have FINALLY changed their mind over this. I am more than happy to have been proved wrong as it was a ridiculous policy.

When did they change it - I was strictly told when the Z4 came up for renewal in May that if I didnt take it out, I could never take it out again. Similarly when they changed the rules the first time and exluded my car, only to change them again a year later which would re-include it, they wouldnt let me take it out as my previous warranty had lapsed.

Just tried to get a quote..

Please be aware that to get a quotation you will need your vehicle registration, the PIN Number and Login name detailed on your Insured Warranty invitation letter.

Won't quote me without an invitation letter?

I vill say zis only vonce (more again for the millionth time)

A £45K car new tends to have the running costs of a £45K car through its life even if you can buy it for a tenner.

I will never understand why everyone doesn't get this.

I reckon the next facepalm moment will be Matt82's new super cheap Audi S4 :/
