Hi guys,

I noticed the service light on my BMW came on the other day. Then a message comes up saying the service is due in 4,500 miles. Took me a while after reading on the forums and the handbook to discover it was the brake fluid warning light.

I dont really want to take the car to BMW for this service. I will get the engine oil and break pads done at BMW.

The local mechanic and kwik fit can change the brake fluid, but are unable to reset the service light.

I know how to reset the engine oil and break pad service light.

Does anyone know how to reset the brake fluid warning light, which is currently flashing amber when I start the car.

Thank you.

A brake fluid service at BMW is not particularly expensive and your 7 series is still worth quite a lot. Why would you have BMW change pads but get krap fit to change the brake fluid?

The brake fluid warning light isn't on mileage. It's done every two years. The 4500 miles will be for the next mileage lifed item. Look in iDrive it will tell you the month and year the brake fluid is due, my guess is you have less than a month left if its on amber. My dealer charged £90 for the brake fluid change, if your not getting it done at a main dealer why would you get your brake pads there.

The reset is similar to resetting the pads, just keep going until brake fluid is highlighted.

Are jobs like pads/brake fluid/oil change not easy things to do on BMWs?

Done all three on my (fix it with a hammer and roll of tape) Ford with relative ease. Just curious as I'm looking at a beemer, albeit an ancient one, this weekend.

You can do them yourself but why bother? O
n an older e46 a brake fluid change it BMW is 50 quid, not worth the hassle for that money.

It's a bit more for the newer ones but you will take a chunk off its value for not getting it done properly.

They are very easy to work on but you affect the residuals. If you take away one part of the service schedule from BMW you might as well get it all done cheaper.

I see your point.

Idrive indicates the brake fluid needs changing soon.

I was assuming a brake fluid change would not warrant a service stamp from the dealer. That's why I was thinking of getting it done locally.

Can someone correct me on this please.

I've confirmed that having brake fluid done at a nondealer hasn't affected my extended warranty at all.

2 dealers have confirmed this along with 2 people at extended warranty as I didn't beleive them.

Fox will quote that you must have it done at a main dealer to keep the warranty intact however as it appears this has not been the case.

I took my car in for some warranty work and no one had any problems with my pads, discs and fluid being changed at mercedes in the past.

You don't have to have anything done at a dealer if you don't want to. There is a section in your BMW service book though to indicate you have had the brake service done, depends if you want a BMW stamp in there or not. My only thing with getting other places to do any servicing is that by doing so you remove any chance of goodwill from BMW if you have a major problem. For me my car isn't old enough to scrimp on servicing it elsewhere yet.

Brake fluid changes are stamped in the service book.

It is written in black and white in the policy documents for the BMW insured warranty. The fact that some dealers don't notice or choose not to make it an issue does not change the fact that the policy requires the car to be serviced by a dealer.

Just received a quote from my local BMW dealer in Bradford.

£88.40 that includes a 10% discount.

I tried to haggle, the lady wouldn't have any of it. She also stated that if I went to a third party and had the fluid changed. BMW would charge £23.00 pounds to reset the service light.

You can get it down further, get a bunch of quotes.

Anyone can reset the light.

Depending which year idrive you have, you can just do it yourself. (resetting the light that is)

just received a decent quote from the main BMW dealer in Huddersfield.

£70.00

Going to have it done tomorrow, the next service due is in 4,500 miles.
