Well today I had the pleasure of testing (for a good few hours) a BMW 535d

In the prep room.

Just for those unsure of this model, the specs are as follows:-

2993 cc Straight 6 (24 Valve) Twin Turbo.
272bhp at 4000rpm / 560nm at 2000rpm
18" alloys, M-Tec body kit, Alloy Interior
6 spd box, etc, etc

Sorry for papish photo.

I've got to admit, up until about 3 years ago I was a total petrol head. Anything Diesel was smokey, dirty, pap performance, and only good for one thing...........economy. Then I was introduced to a 330d and everything changed. Voted on numerous occassions as the best Diesel engine in the world the x30d was an engine to aspire to and even in 182bhp trim it flew, and shifted failry heavy exec. cars to 100mph in 17.4 seconds and onto 148mph where it finally ran out of puff.

So, 5/6 years on, BMW have fundamentally retained most of the M57 whilst giving power increases and adding harmonic balancer units, etc, etc, but now, they've gone one better.

Behold, the 535d.

I've got to be honest, if you've driven a BMW you'll understand that they are worth their price. New, this car is £40k basic for the M-Sport. This is a second hand car which had over £6ks worth of extras and is on the forecourt at £35995. The interior is nothing short of amazing. Totally luxorious and the quality of materials used really is second to none. The i-drive system initially received large criticism, but please remember, the average age of someone driving a car like this (NOT A 520d rep mobile) could be well into their 30s / 40s, etc. The i-drive to someone reasonably technically savvy (and it has been redesigned) was a doddle to work and all the main functions were easy to find. There were loads of sub menus, but again they were easy to scroll through and select what you wanted. This model came with air conditioned seats which was really really nice! Very roomy, and at 6ft 3" there was a load of room in the back had someone wished to sit behind me.

The drive was well...........awesome...........absolutely stunning. Turn the key, I had to check the Rev counter to ensure this was the 535d and not a petrol variant. The 4500k redline confirmed that yes this was indeed the diesel. Funny, I couldn't hear the engine, lets blip the throttle. WOW, the car rumbles from side to side as the 6cyls start doing their thing.

Out on the road, this car is unbelievable, power everywhere, I pootle around town in 4th and am able to shove my foot to the floor and roar off from 30mph with no lag, its like someone has hit the N O S! Take it onto the A338 and wait for the NSL signs. BANG, I floor it, 50mph to 80mph in 4th takes seconds, I mean seconds. The second turbo comes in completely smoothly, you don't feel it apart from a 'greater' shove into your seat, 5th pulls you round the dials even more rapidly, i'm hitting well into three figures now on my private test track! 130mph indicated and I could have put it into 6th and let the second turbo carry me on to the 155mph limited top speed. The problem was it felt like I was only going 80mph until I glanced at the speedo and realised that the owners of this private test track would have something to say if I had been stopped! Onto the A31, a long dual carriage way with 4 rapid round a bouts in succession. This thing handles too, very very well. For a 5m long car it hogs the roads on its 245 shod tyres and doesn't let go. I want more......MORE. Not even a squeel as I punch the last round a bout a good 15mph more than i'd have felt comfortable with in any other car! Floor it and the wave of torque kicks in again, and my grin just gets wider and wider!

This is the car i'm aspiring to own in the next few years, and test driving one today as just re-affirmed what I always thought the car would be like. A complete and utter mental motor car that shows clean heels to almost everything else on the road and returns a healthy 40mpg in the process!

I love it, but I would have loved it more in black!

Whats the modding potential, can it get to 350bhp with just a chip or anything?
Yes, sorry, should have mentioned that I guess.

BMW actually offer a warranty covered chip which boosts bhp to 345bhp and torque increases to........................wait for it..............710nm!!!!(650nm in the auto / step as the boxes cant handle the torque as well as the manuals)

Sounds like you had a blast mate!

I've read somewhere the 535D refered to as "The Thinking mans M5" - No offence ment to Spie! :o

LOL, that is exactly what the dealer said to me. I really really didnt want to hand the card back! I fell deeper in love today, and it was probably the worst thing I could have done as I really want one bad!

In what way is a 535D better than a M5? And don't say fuel economy, because someone who spends £40,000 on a car is not going to very bothered about achieving over 30mpg.

Umm, we havent said thats its better, and its not. Its just really not that far off!

 Yawn, sometime i get so bored of the baiting on these forums its like being at Playschool!

But yes, I suppose I should have mentioned it earlier. As part of the £6k options the previous owner opted for a manual 6sp box at a cost of £1200 in lieu of the auto step box.

The E46 330d manual 6 spd boxs can take more torque (some 30nm more) than their auto / step equivalents. When the salesman mentioned the chip to me, he also stated that BMW recommend the manual over the auto for the best gains. As this comment was in line with the facts about other x30ds I didnt question it.

As for the pic properties, you might want to check again! :p

Interior, actually I agree, I also prefer E46 and E39 to new model E60 and E90, although I have to admit, the E60 is not as bad as people make out and I found it very pleasureable to drive. Not as driver angeld as previous models but still well thought and laid out.

EDIT: Actually, according to BMW, 530ds only come in Auto too, but i've seen and been in plenty of manual E60 530ds

Frankly I trust BMW's own website a little more than some random review found through Google :)

Which is interesting as even BMWs own website is confusing.

You'll note from this image that the 530d and 535d only have one 0-62 time listed. The bracketed 0-62 times are for the auto/step boxes, so if what you are saying is correct, then the 530d only comes in a manual, and the 535d only comes in auto (although not clear from this image). If having an autobox is an option on the 530d then why (according to all these BMW 'oracles' (excuse the pun :p )) is the 535d not allowed a manual? After all, i'm sure all those who have commented have driven one! And why did I drive an option fitted manual 535d, and why do neither have a bracketed auto 0-62 time? Very helpful BMW, very helpful.

In addition, someone mentioned about BMW building inadequate boxes for the torque. Unfortunately, they don't build their own boxes and are limited by Tremec's (and other GB manufacturers) design.

Well, at the end of the day, I enjoyed myself! :)

Next time (if I test drive one) i'll get the definitive answer on the Gbox and i'll be sure to spray OcUK all over the bonnet in brake fluid just to proove it

bored so i have some questions:

- why did the person who drove car in turn the front wheels when parked? parked it specifically for a good photo shot?
- were the 2 pics taken at different times? looks like the interior shot was taken with a different camera and outside rather than in the preproom.
- why have you blanked part of the number plate? a car that is in a showroom / forecourt that thousands of people drive past each day.

random boredom :]

Thank you for you reply, I will make my points to yours that I think are worthy of a reply.

Firstly, the car is for sale (or has just been received by the Dealer). One with common sense would assume that a photo of said car would be taken for advertisements, etc. As I was there when the car was preped for a photo, I took the same shot as the dealer. Would you really think a dealer would have such a pap camera phone as a Nokia 6230i ?

The interior photo was taken outside because thats when I (me) first opened the door to get a whiff of that new car smell.

The number plate was blanked out because I felt like it!

If these questions were posed just because you were bored, then MY GOD you need to get out more....maybe test drive some cars............its good fun! ;)

Merv Harmans in Dorchester. Independat BMW Dealer.

By strength of extreme fate, they also happen to be getting a Black 535d 7speed Auto SMG Drive Logic model! but I dont see BMW listing this, so it must be impossible!

Also, you've all failed to mention why BMWs site shows the 530d with only one 0-62 time (when all the others have a bracketed time for the Autos), and the 530d spec says 6spd manual, yet it is readily availble in Auto format.

Oh well, I guess its just not possible!
