Hi all,

Ownership basic questions here... if anyone can assist it'd be a big help!
All questions directed at an F30 330D xDrive M Sport (63 plate).

1. Is there a way to set the auto-stop/start to default to 'Off' instead of 'On' (when engine is turned on, and also when engine mode is altered during the drive).

2. What is the best way to get iTunes music onto the audio system? My iPhone feels clunky with the Y-cable and it is quite annoying how it automatically resets all settings (random/current track etc) when you re-insert phone.

Also, with the standard iDrive, what can you do with it exactly? I know you can pull up vehicle info, parking sensors (R and F) and radio stations, but are there any graphical options, videos or internetty things you can do with it?

As far as I know they cant show the op what he wants because it's not an option. I think it needs to be coded.

They won't code it to default last setting as the cars tax band is based with stop start enabled apparently and it changes that. You can get it coded if you get a lead and software or pay someone to do it for you.

You dont use a Y lead with the newer iDrive. You get more more functionality with the standard apple lead.

I do believe BMW still will turn it off if you ask nicely, however in the next few years it'll get clamped down and dealers wont be allowed to do it, as stop/start it a big fuel economy saver over the certification cycles.

This stop start cant be good for the engine in the long term???

It's not too bad from my understanding, the technology has been around for a while now so newer engines will be designed around it. The main thing I'd be worried about failing is the starter itself, but these are tested for millions of cycles.

Seriously? Does the audio stream through the Lightning -> USB connector?

The y-cable is a PITA as it doesn't engage the phone correctly, and often needs reseating a few times.

There've been occasions where they have stalled (even on autos, when high demand systems are active ... such as Air Con) according to americans. It is quite disconcerting when an opportunity to pull out emerges, and you have to wait for the engine to start up again...

It hasn't failed to start up again, but it is very unnerving when it turns off. I've seen vehicles with this feature, and i've honestly thought that they've stalled!

You never have to wait for the engine to start backup again, on a manual at least, not sure on autos. My dad has had stop start in his BMW and now C Class, and in both cars, by the time the clutch peddle is fully pressed on ad before he has even finished selecting 1st the engine is on.
If the car has been at lights for a while and the system detects high load on the battery, such as the air con kicking back in, or fans speeding back up etc, it will start the car regardless.
I think its a fantastic system, both in the BMW and in the merc. It helps improve economy, meaning more fuel for actually driving, not wasting it at traffic lights.
Whilst I'm sure there will be the occasional blip it does work flawlessly.

Having driven a few cars with stop/start I've found the easiest way to get it to restart if its an auto is to release the pressure on the brakes slightly.

It can't be great if you've got a turbo'd engine and go for a spirited drive then have to stop at a red light, we all know never to turn a turbo'd engine straight off after pushing it.

Diesels must love this technology

We all know, and yes they do to, the cars that is,
After a high load application the start stop is disabled.

I hooked up my iphone (5S) via USB to lightning cable to the car... Nothing happened except for 'trust this computer?' on iphone.

No connectivity was possible.

It works fine on my car with pro nav. Maybe thats one of the differences with standard iDrive then.
