I know that previously there have been a couple of people who are engineers in the F1 industry, so I'm hoping they can provide some insight!

As I've now finished my Msc in Mechanical Engineering, barring my dissertation which is due in September, I have been applying for jobs to try and set myself up for when I fully finish my degree.

My passion and dream career is within motorsport, and my CV is very much catered towards that, having a year with Formula Student. My BEng and Msc dissertations are both catered towards the automotive sector, with my BEng dissertation being a physical experiment measuring drag on car roof boxes, which involved creating foam models and chucking them in a wind tunnel, and my Msc project which I am currently working on is performing CFD analysis on a formula student front wing.

I've just been applying for as many firms as possible, and that included a non-graduate Aero CAD designer at Sauber. I was very surprised to see that the head designer had emailed me back asking me a variety of questions about surface and solids modelling and how much CAD experience I have. I replied with the relevant answers and today I found out I've been invited to an interview in Switzerland in a few weeks time!:D

I'm in the UK, so all flights are going to be arranged for me and transport from Zurich to their base. Now I'm just wondering if anyone has any pointers or tips as to what to expect and how to prepare? I haven't used CAD in a while so I'm looking to get back up to speed with it and print out a few of my examples that I will do, both 2D and 3D design. I'll also bring copies of my dissertation and various courseworks etc.

Any help would be highly appreciated!

To be honest I wouldn't bother going for the interview, and instead concentrate on marketing the time machine you appear to have invented!

:D:p

On a serious note though, step 1, get the company name right.

Where have I made a mistake about the future?? :p

Also, their full name is BMW Sauber?

Not since 2011, they are just Sauber again now :)

Think BMW didn't even have anyhting to do with the team since 2010, but they had to keep the name for entry purposes or somehting, which is when we had the funny sounding "BMW-Sauber Ferrari" :p

Yea don't call them BMW-Sauber in the interview :p

Afraid I can't offer much practical advice but I wish you the best of luck! They must see something in you to be flying you out all that way :)

Thanks, I was extremely surprised I managed to get it considering I'm a graduate :D

Ah okay, cheers for that, didn't realise they'd changed names, could have been embarrassing if I referred to them as BMW Sauber in the interview :p

Yeah BMW jumped ship in 2010, but to late for Sauber to be renamed in 2011 and not lose out on the 2010 prize money. So they ran 2011 as BMW Sauber, and in 2012 onwards just as Sauber.

Good luck with the interview though! Sounds like a great opportunity!

Haha yeah calling them BMW Sauber would have been a bit of a pants on head moment. Would be a nice demonstration of your current F1 interest :p :p

Good luck with the interview! They wouldn't ask people to go to Switzerland if they felt they didn't have a chance so you must have impressed them. Get in there son.
