Hi,

I'm not too technically au fait with Cars and engines, but I have a friend with a BMW 318 2004 which has the onboard engine management system. This has been linked with a diagnosis system and the error codes are 1050 and 1062. Has anyone had these codes or would know what the cause might be? I would be really grateful for any advice.

Thanks guys,

Blue.

There's a fair few bmw forums around, I'd suggest checking on some of them as the guys tend to be very knowledgeable

Yeah, the problem is that a garage is quoting £400 and a personal friend, who is a mechanic is quoting £410 purely for parts and throwing in labour for free. He seems to think that its 6 hours labour, so a bit of a disparity.

As in P1050 and P1062? My colleague just had these pop up on his car, they are related to VANOS - BMW's variable valve timing. Expensive is to be expected.

I don't think the 318 ever had VANOS. It's usually the Valvetronic system that died in these. Expensive either way.

Hi,

Yes, I believe it is valvetronic. From my understanding it may either be the sensors that need cleaning or new sensors? Apparently that will be the cheapest fix if that works?

Guessing this is petrol?

P1060 - Variable valve timing (VVT) control motor, bank 2, - supply voltage circuit malfunction
Possible cause - Wiring, connections

P1062 - Variable valve timing (VVT), bank 1 - limp-home mode - full stroke position not reached
Possible cause - Wiring, connections, ECM
