The family bus it's getting a bit long in the tooth, but I have to say it's been super reliable. A Honda Crv 2.0 petrol auto.

I'm liking the look of a bmw x1 2.0d 4x4 auto.
Any experts here know what to look out for with these?
How's the auto box? Engine reliable?
Budget is up to around 12/13k so looking at a model a few years old.

Cheers

Why would you like the look of the most hideous creation BMW have ever spat out?

They're based on a much older 3 series platform so aren't particularly big for a family bus.

Buy a 5 series. Much better car in every single way.

They're based on a 3 touring like the X3 are they not? Certainly a good bit bigger inside than a 1 series.

Regardless I tend to agree, they're not as good as a touring and worse than any of the other X's - does the money buy a revised x3?

The worst BMW I have ever driven - really not nice. There was a facelift which made things rather more tolerable but honestly if this is the sort of car you want then other manufacturers do it either better or for less money. It does not meet the high standards set by the rest of the range.

Don't waste your money... terrible vehicle and utterly pointless just like every other SUV on the market.

You would get more space from a 3 or 5 series estate and also get better fuel economy.

Otherwise, the 2.0d engine is quite reliable.

Advice = get a 3 or 5 series touring, don't touch an X with a barge pole...

What? If course not. There are many SUV type vehicles, its just that the X1 isn't one of them.

Its actually the least reliable bmw engine in some time...

No, every SUV is the most wasteful vehicle ever created.

The 2.0d is one of the more reliable diesel engines around, certainly in the top 50th percentile... making my statement valid.

- Frequently less storage space than an estate
- Increased fuel consumption
- Reduced safety

All so someone can have a slightly better view?

Yup... wasteful ;)

Meanwhile a Porsche boxster.

... Less storage space and passenger space than a saloon
... Increased fuel consumption
.... Reduced safety.

All so someone can look good and go fast?

Yup... wasteful ;)

We should all be careful of our glass houses before we throw stones at entire market segments we deem 'pointless' as I doubt anyone here has exactly the car they require and nothing more..

Yeah, I'll let the National Park know to get a 320d Touring the next time they need to get 7 people and a trailer up a muddy hill.
