BMW's and black number plates?

What is the deal with black number plates with the silver letters/numbers? I thought by law plates had to be yellow for the rear and white for the front?

I keep seeing more and more BMW's around Aylesbury that have them, usually of the M variants. Is it a German thing? Are they legal?

Illegal, yes. German thing - no - Pre 73 cars in the UK typically came with black and silver plates (although most of them by then had converted to the white/yellow scheme). These classics are the only cars by law that are legitimately allowed to wear them.

trouble is, unless its a classic registration its illegal

i agree on the look, the black and white plates do look good on black cars. But they're illegal

I have classic plates on my cobra (Q plate, so in theory illegal). I have been stopped so many times by traffic cops while out for a chat, and never been pulled up on it.

Although it does look right on that car

Makes no odds how old the registration is, if it's a modern car it's illegal.

Keep seeing those on German cars. They really do look rather ridiculous as well.

Most people won't even notice and those that do will think 'UK plate, German font, yawn'.

My dad's Ford Anglia has Q plates, but he has black/silver plates on the car. He says it just doesn't look right with white/yellow plates. He does however have a set under the seats, just in case!

I really wish I could legally put a white plate on the back of my Prelude, being a white car, the yellow just looks out of place!
