Hey,

Thinking of setting up a low powered system for my outside Camera recording.

The camera i have has a BNC connector, Although I'm confused to what sort of card i would need to put inside the computer.
Assuming it would would be something like this? Pci Capture card?

Yes that's right, that is a capture card although it only has one decoder so won't record 4 at once I believe. Presumably something newer can handle multiple inputs just fine!

The BNC connector should carry the same signal as a "normal" yellow RCA carrying composite video, so most analogue capture cards should work.

Didn't realise just how expensive some of these are, Especially newer Pci-e ones.

The one i posted above is around 30 quid used, Although that pricing would mean its really not worth it and might as well just buy a used DVR box which are around the same price, Completely cutting out the whole PC etc.

Cheers Benski

I've seen PCIe cards for £30 and USB as low as £12, I googled "composite video capture" and added PCIe or USB. But agree with old stuff like this it may make sense to get matching older compatible gear :)

Is there a reason for staying with the BNC camera versus replacing it with something like an IP camera? A modern IP camera would be able connect into your home network, likely offer a higher resolution, and your recording PC would only have to record the feed using its normal ethernet connection ( heck, it could even use wireless )

I got confused because a lot of the capture cards don't come with that BNC "locking connector" so wasn't sure if those capture cards without the locking mechanism was actually the same :)

Purely because i was given a brand new BNC dome camera which is ideal for outside the garage :)
I already have cameras all around the house which are IP cameras but you cannot add anymore than 4 cameras to that box, So needed another DVR to run this BNC camera :)

All sorted now anyway just snagged a cheap used 4 channel BNC DVR for £25,Also gives me the option to add more cameras should i need too :)
