Boarding/skiing jackets?

This looks quite a nice jacket but not sure if its suitable for snowboarding

I see no reason why it wouldn't be, it's waterproof to 5,000mm, it has critically taped seams, a powder skirt (this one is very important, particularly if you are learning, cold snow up the back is rarely fun) and it is made by Burton - all indicators of a reasonable level of quality. Fully taped seams and higher waterproofing might be better but unless you are somewhere pretty inhospitable then I'd expect that jacket to be fine - put it this way I've worn some of my jackets with similar specifications at -20C or below after windchill in Finland, at the top of mountains in France and Austria as well as in some of the worst weather you're likely to see in Scotland and been fine.

However it may be different for you and I'd certainly recommend trying it on, fit is more important than specification beyond a certain base level of being passably waterproof and breathable.

Just been reading the Burton size guide and i think i am gonig to go for the poacher coat and if its not suitable get it refunded as I have 14 days but wondering what size to get.

I am a 33-34" waist with a 31/32" inseam, medium in most jackets but dont really know what Burton sizes are like so would you recommend going for a Large or Medium? Or possibly go to a boarding shop in my local city and trying some Burton jackets on before purchasing? Not sure how long the offer is on for

If you are all boarding you need to stand out to get laid. Get something ridiculously bright or camo, and if its luminous it will show up really well on the slope raves, that or get something white so that a) you can hide in the snow and stealth approach snow bunnies and b) it glows under UV.

Even better.. bright camo.. infact.. I want one..

...
Any other brand helmets I need to look at?
...
I bought an Osbe ski helmet from Gatwick Distribution Services at the London Ski & Snowboard show. Probably not a lot of use to you unless you live near Gatwick since the two most important things are that the helmet is "approved" and that it is a comfortable fit - which you really can't tell with mail order.

For what it is worth, I checked out helmets on the huge Snow & Rock, Ellis Brigham and Ski Bartlett stands as well as various others and the Osbe was definitely the most comfortable - but it is a question of personal preference.

If you can get yourself to a shop easily to try it then I'd suggest you do that but failing that I'd probably go with the larger size and if it is too big then send it back for the medium provided you like the basic jacket. Boardriders guide tends to just keep those prices unless they either run out of stock or it is marked as being a special sale/clearance item so I'd guess you've got no great rush.

You could always hire a Jacket for the holiday, unless your planning to ski/Snowboard again after this holiday. You could probably hire a decent jacket for that price your intending to buy one, which will be much higher quality than the one you are thinking of buying. It's up to you, as long as the jacket will keep you warm and offer enough pockets and be resilient enough then it will be fine!

Where would you hire a jacket from?
Of all the resorts I've been to, I don't think I've ever seen anywhere that hires outerwear.

Have a look at Tog24, Helly hanson and North Face for three reliable brands for ski wear. In roughly increasing price with North face having the better quality of gear in most cases, but with a decent price premium.

Depending on the time of year you are going go for either a warm jacket (Late December -> End Feb) or a Thin jacket with layers for the rest of the period.

As above get something really 10,000 mm rated water resistance as this is roughly the amount you would like to rely on for the week, and reproof the jacket over the summer to sustain it.

I get most of my stuff from Bicester village near oxford, but if you have retail outlets near to you try them or Tk max/Online for other cheap deals from reliable dealers.

Have fun!

Can't really comment on the 10,000 mm rated water resistance thing because I have never checked. However, the last two jackets I have used for skiing were both Gore-Tex jackets with hood and pit-zips (Schöffel £160? & Mountain Equipment £250?). I also use them for hill walking and general wet weather wear throughout the year. Layering is the important heat thing.

Reproofing - never done it, never felt the need.

As iraiguana says - Have fun; winter sports are definitely where it's at!

Get a helmet, someone I know got hit in the head buy a boarder jumping from off to on piste, helmet saved her life. People that don't wear them are just naive, you going a considerable speed (if your not people around you are), get hit and your a gonna.

When I was doing a season there were far too many people getting picked up off the snowpark in a chopper, a few on them didnt make it. Protection is good and once you get used to it, it makes the experience better.

go to TK Maxx and get a jackt which has gore-tex. then build up layers under it

i got my nike gore-tex one there for £70. I have been deep powder off piste skiing in it and i was toasty and dry.

I was looking at the ski gear in the Kingston branch on Sunday and they had shed loads of deals for top quality gear.

I will have had a look in there but nothing really caught my eye as most of it was to bold and vibrant or they didn't have my size and there is usually a reason why they are discounted so heavily. I believe its due to those jackets not meeting the quality standards and have small problems i.e. stitching. Quote me if i am wrong though

That jacket i am pretty set on as i would also be able to wear as an every day jacket.

The website you link to doesn't show me the jacket you want but it seems like a reasonable enough website and there is a physical presence for the store which is usually a good sign. Oddly enough I can't recollect ever seeing the store but then again I always used to go into Boardwise in Edinburgh so had no real reason to look there.
