Bodged iOS install/restore?

I recently updated my iPad to iOS8 (OTA) with no issues, everything remained as it was before (photos/iMessage etc etc).

I decided to update my iPhone via iTunes, so I plugged it in and it first did a backup, then wiped the phone. However it was a massive ordeal trying to get iTunes to pickup the phone after this (was getting Error 3014). I fixed finally, by manually putting the phone into restore mode, then I ran the update again and it managed to update.

I've now logged into iCloud on my phone using my normal details, but none of my apps automatically reinstalled (is that normal?) but there were in my "not on this phone" section of the AppStore, so i just reinstalled them from there).

None of my messages in iMessage have appeared and also my photos are gone (if my messages are still in the cloud, which they must be, if they're on my iPad right?) then how come my iPhone is blank? I've waited hours (just in case it was taking ages to sync) but it's now been about 8 hours so surely that's enough time (!?)

As I've never done it before, can someone confirm what will happen if i restore my backup from last night (prior to the update)? Does it have any bearing on the actual OS, or is it purely personal data it restores?

As i've already setup my apps again, all I really want to do is get my photos and messages back.....

Any pointers appreciated!

OK Great so I thought i'd do a current backup (if the pre-iOS8 update restore went balls up) and now it's overwritten my backup haaaaaaaaaaaa

I thought it would have created an additional "restore point"

OK so the question now is, is there any way to get my iPad messages on my iPhone?

If you backed up to your mac/pc then check your preferences in tunes and there should be a devices tab. Check in there and see if there is more than one backup. They are normally date and timed.
