hey guys,

I reinstalled XP on my HTPC today but while in the process of selecting which partition to install on to, I seem to have selected two!

I wanted to format and reinstall the C: partition but when i selected it during the install it told me that it didn't like a 'simple' partition on one (G:\) of the 3 hdd installed.

Since there was nothing on the drive (G:\) I needed I just deleted the partition and created a new one then it allowed me to select the C: partition and it installed without an issue. After reinstalling everything and configuring it, I decided to deleted the troublesome partition but it wouldn't let me.

Turns out, I have half of the files needed to boot on my C: drive and the other half on G:

My C: drive has;

AutoExec.bat
config.sys

and my G: drive has

boot.ini
NTLDR
NTDETECT

So, since I don't want to reinstall again, can I move the files on G:\ to C:\ and point the boot.ini to the correct partition?

Cheers for reading :)

I don't know what logic win7 installer uses to decide which drive to stick its boot sector code in, but it seems very fickle.

I've had instances where it wouldn't select the drive which is my primary boot hdd in the bios, but would instead put NTLDR on my media drive. Why? I have no idea.

In the end, I just disconnected the media drive whilst windows was installing. It then correctly put NTLDR on my boot drive, as I was expecting it to...
