Hi there,

Are there any body builders out there who can give a few recommendations at all. I used to be very keen in the gym and went regular a few years ago and was seeing some great results but unfortunately have suffered from injury and cannot train upper body since then. I'm going to return to the gym this week after 2 years, what protein, muscle building, weight gain supplements do you use?

I'm currently looking at USN and Met-RX.

Opinions please :D

I personally like the chemical nutrition range (promass etc.) and reflex products.

My mate is using maxi-muscle promax and progain at the moment and just put 4 pounds on in a week.

multipower power Gym Professional Whey about £35 per 2.5kgs has glutamine added pretty tasty too .

thier creatine is good value as well .

or

Powerbeck whey isolate is good.

Whey protien and oats (either powdered from myprotien or from supermarket) added into milk is perfect, no need for all the marketing hyped up rubbish :)

Go to www.myprotien.co.uk

Type www.sports-nutrition.net into the pricematcher on the homepage to get 10lb unflavoured whey for 22 quid delivered

This will work out a hell of a lot cheaper than the weight gainers talked about, also a lot better for you aswell.

Use MP18875 for 5% discount on your first order ;)

As above. Whey, Oats, Flax, Milk is your best bet.

Don't buy weight-gain products the above is exactly the same and much much cheaper.

Bolgers put his first :) it's MP18875.

First of all I reccomend a good, clean diet and adequate rest and sleep. For supplements you can't go wrong with whey, creatine and a good multivit if you are just starting out.

The 4lbs gain in a week will be mostly fat too.

I find it really hard to put on weight. As a teenager I was quite thin and in my early 20's now I still have the same problems, I can eat quite a lot and not put on a pound. When I was doing weights a few years ago I was using USN and it was quite good, surely though making your own must taste quite vile?

Not at all, it tastes just fine.

You can put on weight, you're just not eating enough of the right food at the right time. I've heard many people say they eat a lot and when they actually tell me what they eat it's not a lot at all. Consume more calories than you burn in a day, and you'll gain weight.

Post your typical daily diet and we'll have a look :)

Breakfast
Bowl of Frosties/Fruit & Fibre

Lunch -
4 slices of white bread - Honey roast ham - packet of crisps - glass of water
or
4 slices of white bread - Chicken & Mayo spread - packet of crisps - glass of water
or
4 slices of white bread - Seafood spread - packet of crisps - glass of water
or
4 slices of white bread - tin of broth/soup - glass of water

Tea -
Fish - cod, homemade wedges, sweetcorn
or
Chinese stir-fry chicken - fresh wok veg - sauce
or
Steak, wedges, veg

This is basically my eating regime, it varies slightly depending when I am working but this is the sorts of foods I eat. I also have the occasional maccies ;) and chinese take away per week. I'm 5"10 and weigh around 10st 11.

Just ordered some maximuscle :D

Without putting too fine a point on it........that's a kinda average diet for someone in their 20's - no where near "a lot"! I probably eat the same calories as your breakfast and lunch combined before 9am ;)

Without knowing about how much you're training i'd say you need to double the amount of food you eat if you wanna add any weight (I speak from experience - Under 10st MTA99). Drop the white bread, its no good!!

I found Mammoth Grow to be a pretty decent weight gain supplement.

I'd only recommend using one though if you really don't have time to eat any proper food.

I'm only going to be doing legs/abs at the gym as I am still having physio sessions regarding my injury and any upper body exercise just causes pain/soreness. I still want to take some supplements to assist me while I workout, since I stopped the weights I have noticed my weight decline and muscle go completely in my chest and arms :( Quite depressing thats why I wanna hit the gym again and put everything into my legs.

Interesting article, mine was £25 for 2.2 with a free shaker. I will see how it goes and perhaps look to getting my own ingredients as you suggest.

Sounds serious dude, hope the physio can get you back training again! :( As PAz suggested, you should only use supps when real food isn't convenient. Its so easy to read the label on the tub and think its gonna solve all your problems but generally its marketting BS. A diet of high quality, high calorie, "whole" foods will be far superior to your current diet supplemented with a weight/mass gainer.

Which product did you go for?

First time i ever used creatine mono i put on 2lbs in a day..........100% of it water!! ;)

I have tendonitis in my shoulder/bicep. When I first had it I didn't rest and I just worked through the pain for a long time which was foolish, I haven't been able to shift it as a result and the soreness has stayed with me for over 2 years now I have had various scans and its definately a problem in the tendon. Eating/sleeping is very much an important factor in weigh and muscle gain. Always found it hard though to pack on the lbs and eat!

I went for Maximuscle Progain.

Any problems with tendonitis and Cissus Quadrangularis is the daddy!! ;)

Truly amazing supplement.

Probably because when he weighed himself he was naked on day 1 and fully clothed on day 8 lol :p :D
