Boeing 777 shot down

The threat to civil aircraft over the Eastern Ukraine was only thought to come from MANPAD's, such as the SA7/SA14 or SA16/SA18 type missiles, so a NOTAM (notice to airmen) was in effect warning aircraft to stay away, but only those flying at 7,900 metres or less. MH17 was at 10,000 metres plus, way out of reach of anticipated threats.

Quite simply, I don't think anyone anticipated anything as potent an SA11 system, which is what is being alleged to have been used to bring down MH17, on an airliner.

Nationally of the victims:
47 unknown 154 Dutch 27 Australians 32 Malaysians 11 Indonesians 6 UK 4 Germans 4 Belgium 3 Philippines 1 Canadian
Gasps were heard from journalists when the Schiphol guy told the Dutch numbers. It's more than expected.

yup and its incredibly reckless of Russia to have seemingly 'lost'/given one to rebels

with that many EU citizens on board there will have to be a strong reaction to this regardless of worries about gas supplies...

So no confirmed Americans? (I only say this before as lots were giving unconfirmed reports of 26 Americans - which could still be in the unknown category)

Wrong. The West can and will probably cripple Russia in a matter of weeks unless they publicly denounce the rebels and withdraw all support for them. You've got people from a dozen of countries dead, for no reason other than Russia playing 19th century territorial power games!

Yep. With an incident like this it won't just be the west.

Putin has just penned his political suicide note, and the quicker he's gone the better it will be for Russians.

Sorry if i', not thinking this through but how can they not know the nationalities of those on board? You need a passport to get on and that is your nationality. surely?

I noticed that no Americans are confirmed. That will open a whole other can of worms if Any were on board.

Still a big assumption even though fairly likely to have been of Russian origin, there was/is a ton of military hardware of all grades stored around Ukraine.

I was thinking this, and only thing I could think if, is if they hadn't managed to contact relatives yet.

It's easy done. You're walking along the street, mind on other things, take your handkerchief out your pocket, BANG!, your surface to air missile launcher falls on the floor.
