I think it's a Russian system, so Ukraine could have them, but apparently the rebels have at least one and were claiming to have shot down something just before the news broke.

well after flight 370 obviously still missing and supposed clone or sister airplanes being found in documentation possibly in Isreali storage, then the Malaysian gvt saying it now might be possible it could have landed somewhere, this could go absolutely anywhere.

Where have you been? Russia has been sending heavy weapons over the border for weeks. Many of the fighters are Russian regulars. This is a tacit invasion.
