Hey guys

I have a Worcester Bosch 28i Junior Combi boiler, its currently in a state of ignition lockout, due to running out of gas earlier in the day whilst the heating was on. Normally once you open the gas connection up again and reset the boiler it works fine, however twice before ive had to purge air from the system to get it to work as the heat was left on for a reasonable amount of time while the gas was cut off.

Ive reset the boiler multiple times to no avail and Ive tried purging the system again but nothing seems to be getting through, no gas smell and there isnt any air being released either. The gas connection is open according to my meter, the boiler fires up when hot water is requested, but it will produce a fault light and need resetting.

The fact that no gas seems to be getting through is worrying me, perhaps there isnt a problem with the boiler at all and its due to a blockage somewhere on the line?

For what its worth the fault code that flashes up give the following possible reasons for the fault:
Check that gas is present and at correct pressure.
Check the Combustion CO2 level.
Check the Flue condition.
Check the Ignition electrodes / harness / connections.
Check the Gas valve (coils 140-190Ω) / low voltage harness connection.
Otherwise replace control board.

Ive checked the flue and there is no visable blockages, but the first point is the one im convinced is the problem.

Can anyone weigh in on what they think the problem might be? Obviously Ill get a Gas Safe guy in to do the actual work, but id rather know what im dealing with and not waste money calling out a heating engineer when its a problem with the main gas line and vice versa.

Ta! :)

Why did it run out of gas earlier while the heating was on did you turn the main gas valve off by the meter? And why are you having to purge it so much, if air was getting into the pipework then gas would be also leaking out.

If you haven't been turning the gas supply off then there is a fault with the boiler which is why it wont stay running. It does various self tests and if it detects a fault then it will shut down and wont let any gas through the gas valve on the boiler(so you wont smell it).

You cant really do any test with the gas you self, if your sure it isnt getting gas through which frankly there is no reason for the gas pipework to have failed/blocked then you need a gas safe guy to check you have standing pressure at the boilers regulator.

I would go with a sensor, fan or pcb failure but without seeing it its a bit hard to pinpoint.

Sorry i should have said its a top up meter, we ran out of credit and it shuts the gas off until you either top up or activate the reserve credit.

The gas hasn't reached the boiler where i would normally purge it from, its on the main pipe connecting to the bottom of the boiler itself, is this still the case when the boiler valve shuts down? I.E it wont physically draw any gas through the main pipe at all?

I had an engineer out to look at it when we first moved into the property as this happened, and he did the same thing which is the only reason ive tried it before.

from what you're saying, you've been disconnecting the gas pipe under the boiler ? are you going to do the relevant tests once you have gas back on ?

anyway if you have took the pipe off and no gas it coming out..

its probably just something simple like the gas valve either being turned off under the boiler or at the gas meter..

or another one which a lot of people do is put money on the gas card, put it in the meter but dont follow the instructions on the E6 meter..

you need to make sure the meter says ON and not OFF..

hope this helps, try not to blow your self up

I haven't been totally disconnecting the pipe (i cant anyway), just loosening the nut so the seal isn't tight to let it escape. I have the old soap and water trick to make sure there are no leaks once its tightened up again and the carbon monoxide alarm is primed and ready.

The gas supply is definitely open at the meter, the meter displays "c" when its closed and "o" when its open, there is a manual shut off lever but its full open too, its never been touched anyway.

crack off a nut next to the meter, anything coming through, if not crack off a nut before the meter, if gas comes out before meter its the meter at fault, if it doesnt, its the gas main..

I'm thinking you didn't mean to suggest otherwise, but just pointing out a carbon monoxide alarm will not detect escaping gas, you need a town gas detector to do that.

Is this the only gas appliance?

town gas ? dont think that stuff has been used for over 20 years..

i'll let you off, im guessing you're in your 90s

All sorted now :) Turned out that no gas was getting through the meter, there was a reset button on the back of the regulator which when pressed made a short sharp hiss and the gas started flowing again. Purged the line and now back in business. Cheers for all your help guys!
