Boiler Condemned :(

Lol, pretty sure the one at a relatives is older. Doesn't work well either because the pipes are all microbore and so the whole system tends to boil!!!

Don't get one of these, EVER!!!

Like has been said, worcester or valiant. My preference would be worcester but both are good boilers.

You should expand on that perhaps?...

I've done an absolute tonne of research into boilers over the past few months and currently have a Viessmann sat downstairs waiting to be installed. From what i have read and heard, Viessmann are the absolute daddy of CH boilers. Honestly, anyone who is looking at buying a new boiler, stump up the extra cash and get one of these beauties!

They cost a bit more, but are built to last and have great features.

My setup will be a 35kW combi with a sub mounted mixer kit, all controlled by a weather compensated controller. Basically I get 2 different temps of water for the heating, one for radiators upstairs, and a lower temp for UFH downstairs, and both of these temps are independantly varied according to the outside temperature, so as it gets colder outside, the water in the heating system is increased. -- Makes for a very consistent and comfortable temperature, and adds upto 15% to the effieciency of your system over standard thermostatic controls! Other manufacturers are also offering weather compensation, but not in the same league as the Viessmann offering.

They are much more popular on the continent than they are here though - but over there people tend to get a bit more serious about their heating and hot water. Viessmann don't even market/sell their more expensive boilers here because people in the UK don't see the point in spending that much money on heating...

Im an electrician and all I will say this. Most replies on here regarding the Worcester and Valiant's are spot on. They are the best 2 boilers on the market by far.

How do I know?

I install them.

My advice?

Get a Worcester.

Whatever you do, don't get an energy supplier to fit your new boiler by the way, they are utter rip off merchants.

I had quotes from BG and NPower, where they quoted to simply replace my boiler, leaving me with the original hot water tank and mavity fed system. In each case they wanted in the region of £2,500 to do so, and after looking online for the boiler they had specced, it turned out to be a £500 piece of tat - the NPower quote was for a GloWorm, can't remember about the BG one.

Instead I am now getting an all singing, all dancing, top of the range heating and hot water system for £2200. Admittedly I am doing much of the plumbing work myself, but even so, steer clear of names like BG and NPower when it comes to supply and installation!

Having suffered with a Viessmann for 6 years I now have Vailant, the engineers said it's was not helped by the pipe install and micro-bore, but it did break down every year. Heat exchanger was OK lol.

That looks pretty nice paddy :) Seems to be similarly priced to the Viessmann I've bought and has the option of using optimum start with weather compensation which I don't think mine will do

Still, too late for me to go changing my mind now. Does the ATAG have an option for using a mixer kit out of interest? (Hoping you say no, so that I know i did choose the right boiler for me ;) )

Hmm, I do hope I don't suffer similarly, but I am quite confident in my choice. There are always going to be some bad examples of any product.

Just had a new boiler installed, had a few problems with out 25 year old Potterton so decided to bite the bullet and get a new boiler. Got a Worcester Bosch Greenstar 30cdi (no it's not a diesel :p ) combi boiler fitted for £2100 including 10 new Drayton TRVs for the radiators and an RF thermostat. Really pleased with the price of the install as the fitter had to run a new 22mm gas pipe and remove the old water tanks and replumb where they were and did a really neat job and was there 3 days due to the amount of work. Now we can make our bathroom bigger by removing the airing cupboard.

Other quotes I got ranged from £3000 to £4000 for the same boiler, one guy reckoned the 30cdi combi boiler alone would cost me £1550 at his 'trade' price until I pointed out I could get one myself for around £1000. He said he'd call back and quote for fitting a boiler if I supplied it but of course he never did. I wonder how many similar tradesmen get away with the odd £500 just like that.

Cold showers in winter in a cold house suck. Bring on Thursday!

they've done me no harm! i have an older style boiler with immersion ie if i want a hot shower, i have to put the immersion on for 15 minutes, i never bother (well, maybe 6 times a year) and suffer a cold shower in the morning and evening but feel utterly refreshed afterwards.

i have thought about getting a combi boiler but the £2k installation price is a lot of hot showers for it to break even though it is in my long term plan.

I'm on the www.worcester-bosch.co.uk site at the moment but it doesn't list prices. I'm interested too and wondered what unit prices are and how much an installer would charge? My house is only 1 bedroom / 1 bathroom, single person, so prolly looking at the Greenstar 12Ri.

Google shopping? About £650-700 for the 12Ri according to Google.

The thing with plumbers is that they like to supply and fit, so they would charge you their price for the boiler, though I suspect that this is just to disguise what they charge for the fitting itself. Not that I have a problem with what they charge, it's just annoying it's so hard to find one that is willing to come and just fit and commission a boiler you have bought yourself.

I've been lucky enough to find one that will though, and he is charging £350 to do so. I get the feeling that many plumbers feel uncomfortable charging that to fit and commission so they put the pricing elsewhere, i.e. the boiler itself.

i always thought that the fitter could not commission their own work?

I did read that! I've had a quote of £1800, which doesn't sound too bad really.
How much:eek:

It's less than a days work.

Anyway.

We replaced our Worcester boiler 3 yrs ago with a glow-worm. 3 yrs on getting a Worcester boiler fitted again. NEVER going to touch gloworm ever again.

ive recently been fitting potterton heatmax 24HE's

quite cheap for what you get, good boilers and last if they're looked after and if parts do go, they're quite cheap to buy..

not really into worcester bosch, they dont look robust enough for me and parts arent cheap

Where did you hear that??? 99.9% sure that's untrue.

Did you know that you can actually fit your own boiler including doing the gas work? Not that I would recommend it to anyone, but it's not illegal to do so in your own home.

edit: You have to be competent to do the work! But there is no specified competency assessment as far as i am aware.
