Right so we have a Ferroli combi boiler and the heating won't work, but the hot water works.

I tried switching it on and off, didn't work.

The boiler fills up (well it makes that sound) and it makes another sound, a bit like a heavy creaky door.

Some things that you can check: thermostat, pressure and the pump, air in the system.

First check the thermostat. It might have a battery inside that's gone flat, easist thing to do is swap in a new one and see if it makes any difference. Click the temperature up and down and see if it makes the boiler kick in and out.

There should be a gauge on the boiler to read off the pressure. If it's too low the heating might not work. There should be a pump somewhere that pumps the hot water round the heating system, if it's failed then it won't pump any hot stuff round and you'll get no heating.

Air probably won't affect it but will stop the radiators getting very hot if they are full of air. Get a radiator key from a DIY store and bleed the air out and it'll make them work properly.

Short of that, it's time to call in a plumber.
