BOINC v7 on Vista 64

Man that was a pain. Just got through CHKDSK runs and uninstall/reinstall to get my comp and boinc install back to normal after trying to install v7.0.2x. It is now back at v6.

Not only did v7 boinc not work but it seems to have caused problems... windows explorer crashed, some programs wouldn't run, etc. I'm fairly particular about maintaining my comp and windows so I can be quite sure there wasn't some other issue.

In any case, I tried installing v7 twice.... first time just over v6 and second time after uninstalling first. Version 7 just doesn't work.

So if you're about to update on a Vista comp...

Cheers

Ed: v7 seems to work fine on my WinXP crunchers.

That's interesting, I started using BOINC not that long ago and have had a few explorer.exe crashes myself, I downloaded v7 as I've never done BOINC before. I'm on Windows 7 though. I'm not absolutely sure it's related, but I've seen nothing in my event logs and other than that my machine is running fine, explorer.exe has just crashed silently maybe 4 or 5 times in the last week. If it persists, I'll try v6 instead.

That's interesting. I know that some others have reverted back to v6 for other reasons relating I think to downloading larger chunks of wu's.

By the way, in Vista I have aero 100% turned off, so I experience no issues from that. Crashes started immediately after Boinc v7 install and Boinc itself just didn't run... clicking on boinc icon just made hour glass flash briefly.

Now back with v6 and no problems. So could be some commonality between Vista and Win7. Again, on my XP rigs I have seen no problems yet with v7 boinc.

This is the link from which all recent versions are available...

Hm, well as I say *touch wood* no other problems and BOINC is going fine, just the occasional explorer crash. Nothing in particular seemed to bring it on, I'd be using the PC normally then all of a sudden the desktop icons and taskbar disappear, I'd open task manager - run - explorer.exe and all would be well again, but thinking about it once or twice I had to open the BOINC manager again afterwards.
So...still not sure if it's related but if I get another crash I'll revert to v6 and see how that goes.
