Hey all,

Seen this talked about a bit on here and since I've started playing Company of heroes 2 a lot I'm really getting interested in it!

Just wondering what peoples' experiences have been with it. In terms of models, rules, balance between armies etc?

Many thanks!
Charlie

Played it once with a friends armies, was pretty fun, we played it mostly with infantry so I cant say much for vehicle combat.

I found it had a slight bias towards the americans in the game we played, they have a rule called fire and maneuver which means they ignore the normal -1 on their to hit rolls when moving and firing.
it seemed slightly overpowered in the game we played but I guess vehicles and a larger variety of troops might mix that up a bit!

I did like the way the orders dice work, it really throws a nice random element into the mix!

It did interest me enough to buy a starter set, which I have yet to assemble :p

I've been playing this with my 6 year old son for a little while now and we both love it. He also loves the Company of Heroes games :D

Bolt Action is definitely worth getting into, and some of the army packs are good value. We normally don't play more than 1000pt games on a 6 x 4 board, so you don't need to buy a massive amount of troops. Although the more variety you buy the more choices you can make.

i love the game mechanics, although they can be a little light ie not that much variety due to the simplistic nature, although this means you can concentrate more on the tactics than leafing through the rulebook. The random turn element is what reallyy drew me in though. Instead of the usual "I move all my troops then you move all yours" approach, you draw a die from a bag to determine the next move. So if I had 10 regular squads and my son had 5 veteran squads, there'd be a pool of 15 dice in the bag. One die is drawn at a time, so I'd obviously have a greater chance of selecting on of mine. I can then acivate any unit I like. The number of times where my son drew 4 dice in a row can really **** up your game plan :D

There's a really good introductory game video on Beasts Of War. It's two parts, an hour for each but the time flew by while I watched it and was hooked immediately.

Oh, and we have US and German forces and I think they're pretty evenly matched. The US move and fire rules are great, but the Germans get a great HMG rule, so it's best to take advantage of the individual nations advantages.

Sounds like two thumbs up so far! Definitely going to go for some this week then :D Rules do sound really interesting and I love how much more chance there is!

Glad things are balanced, one bug-bear from 40k is the constant codex creep..

In terms of numbers of models, is 1000 points the same as 1500 in 40k?

Also, looking at the models are they moulded well?

You can get a kindle version of the rulebook (from amzon) for £2 (or there abouts), I have played 1 game of bolt action and loved it, really need to buy a box so I can play more often (I previously used someone elses units). But for a read of the rules the kindle option is worth it.

Love Bolt Action, great mechanics with a nice simple play through game time. Things just work and look nice at 28mm (although the 1/56 or 1/48 vehicle debate can be tiresome). We tend to play infantry heavy in our games as that's mostly the way it was designed (although there is a new Tank platoon combat system add on out now) and if we want vehicle dedicated combat we play the Battlegroup system at 1/72.

Currently have an British North Africa Army and have DAK army under construction (I'll add an Italian Bersaglieri or Airbourne Army after that), Perry Miniatures do some great British and German North African plastics box set supported by a good range of metals and Blitzkrieg Miniatures do the best 1/56 (and 1/48 :p) resin vehicles I've ever seen.

As you may tell, we're really into the North African campaign at the mo ;)

Wargamingforfun do great bat reps on youtube or their own site, mainly hammer but a fair few bolt action games, i don't play but enjoyed watching a couple of games with my eldest and since then I've watched loads of their free vids.
