Hey guys,

I've searched and read a few of the book reccomendation threads, but nothing seems to tickle my fancy :x

The last book i read was Margert Weis' Dragons of Autumn Twilight, and before this Philip Pullman's his dark materials trilogy, along with the LOTR. All three of these have suited me very well, with the Weis book actually reminding me of LOTR quite a bit. So this kinda style is one to aim for, adventure with a bit of fantasy thrown in, nothing to heavy :) I can't seem to see anything similar to these in the book reccomedation threads, so if someone can make me a custom recc. that'd be fantastic :D

Cheers,

Tom. :)

Havent read them but I hear the Dark Tower series might be something to look into. Along the fantasy line, Anne Mccaffrey is one of my favorite authors, for example her 'Pern' series.

Robert Jordan - Wheel of Time Series

About 10 books in total all about 600-700 pages long.

Take LoTR and expand it without it getting boring. Currently on book 6 and am still as hooked as I was after the first book.

You have got to read the Thomas Convent series by Stephen Donaldson- Total classic along the lines you are looking for.

Raymon E Feist - Magician. Followed by the rest of the books in the series.

Currently re-reading Magician. Very addictive

Personally, I advise against that.

Make no mistake, I love the books. But personally, when I buy a book, I like to be able to read the start, middle and end in a reasonable period. I do NOT want to spend 20 years waiting to find out how it ends!

I've been reading this series since 1990. Sixteen f'ing years and it STILL hasn't finished. The Wheel of Time isn't a series, it's a life-long career for Jordan and, again personally, I'm sick of waiting for the finish.

If Jordan had said he was going to spend decades writing this, I'd have waited until he finished then bought and read the lot. Instead, the last few books have been slow, verging on boring, and Jordan seems intent on dragging this out interminably. I just hope he doesn't drop dead before he finishes, and if I drop dead before he finishes, I'll come back and haunt him into his grave.

Get on with it, Robert, for pities sake! :(

Thankfully I was given all 10 books about a month ago - so if you are in a similar position and starting to read them all from scratch - why not?

I would heartily recommend the books by Robin Hobb,

Farseer Trilogy
Liveship Traders Troligy
Tawny Man Trilogy

Absolutely awesome books, some of the best i've ever read.

Terry Brooks - I'd start with the Original Shannara trilogy (Sword of Shannara, Elfstonnes of Shannara, Wishsong of Shannara).

Raymond E Feist - Another recommendation for this great author, The Riftwar saga trilogy is fantastic (Magician, Silverthorn, A Darkness at Sethanon).

As a huge fan of the early Dragonlance books I highly recommend books from the two authors above.

Gets a fire proof coat for Mark_t50 for even suggesting Terry Brooks.

I personally feel that his books are excellent but last time I brought him up in one of these threads I got shot down. Saying that I would still recommend the Shannara series.

Also a good one to look at is David Gemmel - Excellent battles and very fast paced.

I thnk Jordan has gone on record as saying that book 12 will finish the series and we can expect it 18-24 months after the release of book 11. I only started reading them about 6 months ago and because I had them all en masse I thoroughly enjoyed the series. I have to say though that if I had been reading since 1990 a few of the books would have left me feeling cheated. I can't help but feel that there are between 2 and 3 books too many or will be once the series is complete. Book 11 is a bit of a return to form though.

You could also try Eragon and Eldest from Christopher Paolini Linky

Technically I think it's aimed more at teenagers but I couldn't put them down :D

Eagerly waiting for the third and final book..come on Chris!

Yup, totally agree, but can't help thinking that the Donaldson is more along the lines of what he asked for ;)

Only way to find out really is to read everything suggested in this thread :D

Whatever you do don't read the Terry Brooks series...I read them thinking they'd be of a similar quality but the writing style is so childishly poor it was unbearable. One of the only books I put down about halfway through and never continued.
