My uni had a bookfair sort of thing, when 2nd and 3rd years sold their old textbooks to the new students.
They also had a bookshop come into uni, which had a deal, something like £100 for all the core module textbooks if i remember rightly
amazon marketplace is useful - some unis prefer older editions and you can get these for a fraction of the price - i got 50 pound books one or two years old for like 4 quid!
the talk about just using your lecture notes is subjective - depends on the course and uni. also the poster said they will pass you through the exams, when some have higher aspirations and may actually want or need to enrich their knowledge base
