Boom then rattle .. help

ok....

got a 1.4 polo tdi (well it gets me around)

anyways, was drvinging along and herd this huge boom (like someone breaking a crisp packet). now when the car ticks over its has a rattle but no sound when moving.
should i be worried. and if so what could it be.

any help would be usefull

I would take it to a local independant dealer (or main dealer) to be on the safe side.

I used to have an Audi A2 (which has the same 1.4tdi as your car) and it didn't rattle on idle.

Well Id check under the bonnet for leaks etc, check all levels like oil etc. Doesnt sound good

Where's the rattle coming from? Could be catalytic converter?

hes sat behind me and says

"it sounds like something thats between the dashboard and the beginning of the engine"

Any loss of power? Maybe pipe popped off, or the Waste gate blowing? Happened on my mates focus TDCi, sounded just like a crisp packet being popped.

If it's got a gain in power, then the waste gate has probably popped it's valve and it's jammed, thus not releasing pressure. Dunno what the rattle would be, but it'll be more than a rattle when the engine and/or turbo blows.. waste gate is there, to release pressure for a reason.
