Ok this is mainly for the people that are quite new to benching like myself.
Ok so first in Vista (not sure how to do it in xp, quite similiar i imagine) -->
1. Click Start
type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
3. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
4. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
5. Click OK.
6. When you are prompted, click Restart.
7. After the computer starts, start the game or program for results.

And it boosted my 3dmark score in vantage by 1400 and 06 by 3500 which i was very nicely surprised by.

Results do vary so please be gentle with the flaming :p

...and at the same time, make your PC barely usable due to disabling all the applications you may need...

Yes because your going to be using all of your apps when you run a quick benchmark arent you
Anyone with common sense would know that its just for the benchmark and once its done you undo it.
