OC gurus - I need your help.

As my MP3 collection has grown the difference in volume bewteen some of the tracks has become more apparent. Some seem to be really quiet which means constantly adjusting the volume up and down as I play them.
Can anyone recommend some free software that would enable me to boost the volume of the quiet tracks wothout adversely affecting their quality.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, cheers.

Audacity might be able to do that for you, maybe a batch conversion to maximise volume?

Either that or you could find volume normalising playback software

Valve

As above, use replay gain because it doesn't need to re-write your MP3s (it just adds a new tag which software such as Foobar will read) and so a) it's quick and b) it won't reduce their quailty.

Reading up, on replay gain, which I have to say I knew nothing about (and fortunately haven't needed to use) and I have to say, it certainly seems like a much better way of levelling out your audio playback than a batch conversion!!!

Thanks for all the advice folks, and forgive my ignorance, but using replay gain will add tags, will my portable mp3 player be able to read these tags? (I hope that's not a ridiculous question)

not many hardware devices support replay gain (notable exceptions being the sansa clip+ and anything that supports rockbox - a 3rd party firmware. there are probably more. i just don't know about them. :p).

so i guess you'll have to use mp3gain to actually modify the files. always keep backups just incase....
