Boosting range with spare router?

Hi networking gurus :),

I want to boost the range of my wireless network to the garden and garage and I was wondering if there was anyway I could use the spare Netgear DG834G router that I have? My main router as a DG834N I think.

Thanks

Exactly what I've done, there's just a cable going from the HomeHub in my room down to the computer room where there's a DG834GT and that extends the network.

It's just a case of setting the main IP of the spare router to that of one within the range of the first. So if the first router is 192.168.1.255, second could be 192.168.1.254 but not something like 192.168.2.1. There is also something else you're meant to do, pretty sure it's just a case of deleting your internet account details so it doesn't keep trying to log on. Think that's about it.

I tried that, and added it to the allowed list of the main router. 192.168.0.1 is the main one and 192.168.0.10 is the second one

I called the network the same as the main router is that right? It seemed to stop me from being able to connect to the network at all.

It's likely disabling DHCP you're thinking of. Deleting ADSL login details isn't necessary.

I disabled DHCP I think but then couldn't connect to the network at all or get to the config page of the router. Do I need to disable DHCP on the main router too as I have set the addresses for all of the PCs anyway?

Thanks for the help everyone.

If you've manually set them you don't need DHCP, but it shouldn't have stopped you connecting to the network.
You'd disable it on one router because having two running on the one network will cause odd things to happen if you have devices getting IPs automatically.

I just can't get this to work and it's probably because I'm a dunce!

Could someone please review my settings and see where the obvious mistake is?

1. Main router set to DHCP on, address set to 192.168.0.1 and addresses reserved for all devices (including that of the second router).
2. All PC's set to obtain addresses automatically.
3. Second router set to DHCP off and address set to 192.168.0.10
4. Both routers set to the same SSID and wireless channel and region.
5. Second router has broadcast of SSID off.
6. Both routers have RIP direction set to both and RIP version is RIP-1.

I can now introduce the second router and connect to the network but get no internet connection, nor can I access the main routers page, just the second one. Also I can only connect to the network by setting the address manually in my laptop.

Here is the second router's status.

Thanks very much

It might not be the solution, but having both routers on the same wifi channel might be an issue. Put them on automatic.

It may be the fact that they have the same network name, they need to have slightly different one's. Like I've got XXXXXXXX and XXXXXXXX(2).

It may just be that now the computers can't decide which one to connect to, sounds stupid, but I suppose it's possible.

I'll have a look thanks.

Surely they need to be on the same network or they won't communicate with each other?

OK, so the DG834Gv2 that I have isn't capable if this where as the v3 is with a firmware upgrade. The DG834N is also capable with a firmware upgrade that I have just done.

What I need, it would seem, is a wireless access point (or router) that supports WDS/repeater mode (wireless distribution system). Like this;

Thanks for your help everyone. I have got it working by connecting the two routers by cable and setting up the second router as a different wireless network. That will do for no until I can get hold of a router/access point cheap.
