Boot Camp won't partition

Boot Camp Assistant says that it can't partition my hard disk because there are some files that can't be moved. Onyx verified that my hard disk and startup disk are fine, and I repaired disk permissions. Boot Camp suggested formatting my drive and reinstalling Leopard but I'm hoping there's something else I can try first. Any thoughts? Would defragging my hard drive make a difference? If so is there a free program that'll do that?

It will need a defrag, not so much as to actually defragment the files but to consolidate them all together to give you enough contiguous free space.

I've used iDefrag in the past for this purpose, not sure if there's a free equivalent.

I've had this before. The defrag didn't work for me but reducing the size of the Boot Camp partition by ~5GB worked after many furious hours.

If you don't want to pay for something like iDefrag you can backup your hard drive using Time Machine, scrub the internal and restore from the backup. Slightly long winded but should do the job, and making a backup is probably something you should be thinking about doing regardless.

Same issue, backed up to an external and then restored using Carbon Copy Cloner. It defrags for free and is less hassle than a Time Machine Restore (to me anyway).
