boot cd with format?

I have my friends Toshiba laptop (don’t have the model to hand) anyway they had been complaining of issue and been told the motherboard needs replacing, I’m not so sure and have tried to ‘boot to win xp’ and format the drive to start over. However I get errors trying to copy the files across,

I’m looking for some sort of free proggie that I can boot into to do a low level format and wipe the lot, can anyone recommend me something?

file copy errors can quite often be caused by bad ram. it might be worth checking that out with memtest.

yeah i tried the swaping the ram, as i thought the same, someone mentioned the memory controler on the tosh laptops often fail, meaning new motherboard... but hey i should try!
