Boot Issue :(

Just got a new MSI Gaming 5 motherboard along with a 4790k.

Installed everything fine, reinstalled windows to the SSD, have done all updates etc.

But sometimes when I turn the computer on it comes up saying please insert correct boot drive or device. If I restart it it will then boot into windows ok.

No idea why it is doing this as the SSD and everything was fine on my old motherboard.

Anyone have any ideas? :(

This is the EXACT issue ive suffered from since my new build. Something to do if you want to solve it.

Firstly make sure the latest bios is installed, if there is a beta bios available for your board, then get that installed.

Secondly this is sometimes caused by windows assigning the wrong flags next to certain drives. If you go into your start bar and right click on my computer, click on manage. Then click on disk management and see if your secondary drives have any 'active' flags set on them.

Im at work at the moment but when im home ill link you to a post i made on the windows 7 forum where someone helped me download some software that removes this flag and should completely solve the issue for you.

Also worth noting make your your ssd is set as the bootable device, but if like me thats already done then its the same issue for sure. Dont worry though, its fixable. Also if you can update firmware of ssd that could help.

How old is your ssd?

Updated bios and everything else I can get my hands on, all windows updates done.

It is still doing it :(

Hi buddie, sorry for the delay. I've just gone over my original posts and I've got two issues, one the same as yours, and another, which was the error: Inaccessible drive — or something.

Unfortunately my original fix would work for the inaccessible error but not the, please select a bootable device.

I do however still get the same issue as you, so I too am on the lookout for a fix. One thing worth trying, after my weeks of forum searching is a lot of people have mentioned the issue was fixed after running the windows repair from the bootable disk. Running it three times and then seeing how things go.

According to more than one place I looked, people were suggesting that this fixes the issue. I have a secondary SSD that I'm going to try install windows on and see if that fixes the issue, I'm also going to run the repair from disk and see if that helps. I'll report back my findings.

I'm afraid not, it is stilling doing it and seems to be getting worse. Today it took me 6 restart attempts before it finally got into windows.

Always the same black screen saying please insert valid boot device or drive.
All drivers installed, all updates done, bios updates, checked all connections. :(

It's the drive - I've had problems with similar nature on my OCZ Vertex, my brothers, my brother's friends, they really aren't good drives. Get yourself a new one ASAP, clone the data off it before it fully dies and be done with it - try and RMA it/return it for a refund :)
