NTLDR is missing

So I am changing my hard drive, I put it in formatted it and installed XP.

I go to take out my current one and realise it wont boot.

I get the error NTLDR is missing how can i sort this? Clone my old HD? Or is there another way.

Thanks

btw I have no floppy drive also my mobo, p5b deluxe seems to have a problem with booting from disk. So would rather do it without either of them unless totally necessary.

Boot with XP install CD. Press R when prompt to enter the recovery console.

You should end up with a command line. Then type:

fixboot
fixmbr

Then you should be good to go. Might not need fixboot. But def fixmbr!

Thanks for your help

I got onto recovery console and did fixmbr that said it worked however when I used fixboot it apparantly had to target the c drive.

I still have that error.

Now could this be because I have only OEM windows disk? It does not seem to boot like I expected it too. I press f8 during the boot or go BIOS to make it boot from DVD drive and I just have the white underscore sitting there forever, I say forever I left it 5 maybe 10 minutes?

Does OEM boot? I read somewhere it doesn't. Would buying a new windows disk help?

Would cloning my current hard drive work? e.g. with Norton ghost or a freeware alternative.

Is this some lame problem with my pc not booting DVDs?

Any way of copying NTLDR whatever it is from somewhere to my new drive?

update:

I copied my hard drive, didn't log onto windows properly, reinstalled windows cause due to copying my hard drive it was still coming up to reinstall at os choosing screen, it logged on fine and is now in use.

However, my avg antivirus will not initialise and some icons are missing, I think because they are looking for C drive rather than G, anyone know what effect this could have?
