Boot problems... any ideas?

My machine wont boot properly when external devices are plugged into certain motherboard usb sockets. I have to try different sockets and eventually it boots.

You can hear post beep, but then hit hangs on the amibios screen (the one that tells you your cpu speed / ram speed etc)

Could it be sockets are faulty?

sounds like your computer is trying to load the usb device on startup. You could try the following: turn off legacy usb support in the bios and turn off boot from a usb device.
